Iran’s parliament backs blocking Strait of Hormuz. Its closure would alienate Tehran further

Key Points

Should Iran follow through on its threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, it could alienate its neighbors and trade partners.

But the possibility of a closure of the strait is low, experts said, despite Tehran’s rhetoric around closing the strait.

A closure would provoke Iran’s markets in Asia, particularly China, which accounts for a majority of Iranian oil exports.

===============================================================

Iran may be threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz but experts told CNBC that it’s also the one with the most to lose.

In major move after U.S. struck Iranian nuclear sites, the country’s parliament on Sunday approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report from Iran’s state-owned Press TV that CNBC could not independently verify.

The step would risk alienating Tehran’s neighbors and trade partners.

The decision to close the waterway now rests with the country’s national security council, and its possibility has raised the specter of higher energy prices and aggravated geopolitical tensions, with Washington calling upon Beijing to prevent the strait’s closure.

Vandana Hari, founder of energy intelligence firm Vanda Insights, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” that the possibility of closure remains “absolutely minimalistic.”

If Iran blocks the strait, the country risks turning its neighboring oil producing countries into enemies and risks hostilities with them, she said.

Asia gets 70-80% of its oil from the straits. The US gets about 3%.

Yeah. At some point China will tell the Mullahs that they need to STFU or their refineries will get blown up. That would cripple China, so maybe the Mullahs should keep talking trash.

Iran tried to close the Persian Gulf before, which is why our navy has continuously patrolled it for decades.

Actually, if push came to shove, we could close the Straits to Iranian traffic, while escorting friendly traffic safely through.

Iran wants to close the straight of Hormuz?

China and the USA say “No!”.

And that’s that.

Both China and Israel are now on board for regime change, but for different reasons.China’s oil supply is 40% Iran oil. No oil, no regime....

“Asia gets 70-80% of its oil from the straits. The US gets about 3%.”

Right, we may not have shortage problems but we will have price problems, we have them every time Hormuz closes. One time it was just a stuck tanker.

Hasn’t really affected the price of oil much today.
Not sure its going to affect America much.
America produces by far most of its oil internally with more going to come in from Alaska soon thanks to Trump.

It’s unsustainable.

They would be cutting off their own cash flow.

Iran's leadership is so stupid they would cut off their noses to spite their face.

90% of Iran’s oil exports go to China. Less than 3% comes here.

China does need the Straits open.

I would love to see China try to do a little “power projection” and send their navy over to the Middle East and blast Iran into submission to get the oil flowing again. I don’t think they can project at all.

The best thing would be if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and it caused other countries to decide they have had enough of Iran’s BS.

I’d hate to see any of Iran’s civilian population be hurt, though.

I heard this would impact china far worse than US.

In theory but my understanding is that China as an ally of Iran anticipated a closure and has built up a multi-year oil reserve.
