… Brian Higgins, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, said, in most states, including California, the determination of a riot lies in whether multiple people are involved and whether they are committing acts of violence.
"One person is not a riot and neither is a group that is nonviolent," he said. "They can even be breaking the law, like refusing to disperse. It's when you add in the factor of violence that it becomes a riot."

In California, a riot is defined as follows: "Any use of force or violence, disturbing the public peace, or any threat to use force or violence, if accompanied by immediate power of execution, by two or more persons acting together, and without authority of law, is a riot."
Higgins…said while the definition is fairly black-and-white, there are gray areas, especially before and at the point of escalation.
"If you have a group of people, and more show up and eventually someone throws a rock or a can of soda – maybe you could legally say it's a riot but that's probably not the time to do so," he said.
"But once the crowd gets agitated and there's a growing threat of violence that spills out," he said, "that's when you have what can reasonably be called as a riot."

Experts also said while violence is a defining factor in a riot, such violence could be incited by law enforcement.
Ralph Young, a history professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, who has written several books on dissent in the United States, said it is often the case that overzealous law enforcement responses have escalated peaceful protests into scenes of violence and chaos.
"That's a major question. Who provoked the violence?" he said,

“Unrest is a vaguer, milder and less emotional term for a condition of angry discontent and protest verging on revolt,” the AP continued.
“Protest and demonstration refer to specific actions such as marches, sit-ins, rallies or other actions meant to register dissent. They can be legal or illegal, organized or spontaneous, peaceful or violent, and involve any number of people,” the AP said. “Revolt and uprising both suggest a broader political dimension or civil upheavals, a sustained period of protests or unrest against powerful groups or governing systems.”

A poll from CBS News conducted from June 4 to June 6 found that 54 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s plans to deport all of those in the country illegally, Enten continued.
Another 51 percent said they supported agents searching their respective towns for suspected illegal aliens.
Enten also produced three polls that all showed a clear preference for Republicans when it comes to trusting a party to handle immigration.
‘No matter what poll you look at, no matter which way you cut it, the American public is with the Republicans, the American public is with Donald Trump,’ he said.

This reminds me of when we had a recession under Obama - except that they invented a new definition of “recession” in which it was decided by a panel of “experts” rather than being 2 quarters of negative growth - and of course the experts declared these 2 quarters of negative growth didn’t constitute a recession.
When does a riot become a political revolution?
There were no fires on J6, but it was “worse than Pearl Harbor.”
There are lots of fires in the LA “mostly peaceful protests.”

It stops being a protest when criminal acts are committed. What’s happening now isn’t a protest, it’s an attempt to overthrow a policy of the federal government, using violence.
