When a reporter asked him at Thursday’s news conference whether he was going to put more sanctions on Russia, as he had previously threatened, Mr. Trump equivocated. He suggested he would know when the moment had arrived to pile on more pressure, but that it hadn’t yet.

If you’d read the president’s remarks more carefully, he had not said anything so inflammatory.
And it appears they will indeed resolve it in short order.

Putin told Trump he owed Russia a favor since Trump could not control those he is allied with in this proxy war against Russia. Trump got the best deal he was gonna get.
Russia soon announce the antiTerrorist operations, making further US support dry up.
