President Donald Trump said early Wednesday morning that Chinese President Xi Jinping is “very tough” and “extremely hard to make a deal with” as the United States attempts to advance trade talks with China.
While the president’s top trade officials have met with their Chinese counterparts, Trump has yet to sit down with Xi since imposing massive tariffs on Chinese imports. A senior White House official told CNBC that Trump and Xi would likely speak “very soon,” potentially this week.
“I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Last week, Trump accused China of violating its 90-day trade agreement with the United States, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the talks with China “are a bit stalled.”
“Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy!” the president said, referring to the 90-day pause on tariffs. “That is the good news!!! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
Trump’s frustration with China likely stemmed from the Chinese government’s slow progress in complying with the 90-day trade truce that froze most tariffs. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC last week that China was not fulfilling its promise to export rare earth minerals to the United States after restricting shipments in response to Trump’s tariffs.
“We haven’t seen the flow of some of those critical minerals as they were supposed to be doing,” Greer said, adding, “China continues to slow down and choke off things like critical minerals and rare Earth magnets.”
Newly appointed Ambassador to China, David Perdue, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday. During their discussion, Yi accused the United States of imposing “a series of negative measures for groundless reasons, infringing upon China’s legitimate rights and interests,” according to a readout from the Chinese government. Perdue said that during the meeting, he “emphasized President Trump’s priorities on trade, fentanyl, and illegal immigration,” adding that “communication is vital” for the U.S.-China relationship.

Bessent told CBS News in an interview on Sunday that he remains “confident” that the U.S.-China trade talks will be “ironed out.”
“The fact that they are withholding some of the products that they agreed to release during our agreement — maybe it’s a glitch in the Chinese system, maybe it’s intentional,” Bessent said. “We’ll see after the president speaks with the party chairman.”
A Communist Authotitarian Dictator difficult to trust and deal with? Whodathunk?
It’s all about saving face.
He’s fluffing Xi’s feathers a bit to allow him to look good as China’s supreme leader, that’s all.
so we’ll learn to live without Chinese junk and move necessary manufacturing here. we’re drowning in junk anyway. they’ll have to figure out how to employ millions of workers thrown out of work. our problem is survivable.
The Chinese people are known for their toughness and ability to endure hard times. Many would be willing to survive on just a bowl of rice a day if they had to. This shows how strong and determined they are. You can’t easily scare or pressure them with words or threats. That’s why Pete Hegseth recently said that war might be coming. If it does happen, America would win against the communists.
But it won’t be easy, let’s not underestimate China.
Xi hasn’t made any public appearances in nearly two weeks.
Maybe he’s caught the Chicom equivalent of the Soviet cold.
We can only hope that the Biden administration didn’t give them the keys to our country so they can outlast us in a stare down. The trade deficit with China grew all four years of the Biden presidency and it concerns me that we may have put ourselves into a dependency we can’t make up without extreme shortfalls and huge inflation as they control many of our products and most of our ports.
And we need to make a concerted effort to deal with other countries to replace the loss and hurt their other trading countries. Double the tariffs and tax their port and private property controlled by the Chinese government to the extreme. And if they combat it, double it again with a warning we will do it again, and again while we cut down the electronic equipment exports to them along with Mineral fuels, oils, distillation products, Oil seed, oleagic fruits, grain, seed, fruits, Machinery, nuclear reactors, boilers, Aircraft, spacecraft...which constitutes the top six catagories we export to china.

with this latest sabotage attempt on our food supply, I propose:
FULL STOP to all grain exports to china.
IMMEDIATE seizure of ALL farmland owned by the Chinese. Any corporations selling the land will be on the hook for “face saving” reimbursement. Anyone on the property is arrested and held for a time deemed proper by the US. This must be done all at once but Ugly Kristi Gnome is busy cosplaying and camera hogging and arresting fat Fred Flinstone looking Mexican women.
Maybe he has an appointment to accidentally fall out of a window
Was gonna say it’s pretty tough to do a deal with a guy who is either dead or under house arrest. I believe it’s 16 days now and 3 of his top generals have disappeared. My friends in China say the rumors are flying hot and heavy.
The thing with China is that when they had the opportunity to beat us down, they had the worst possible clown in power. Xi is a maoist thug with no skill set outside of attaining power in the CCP. He screwed up China as bad as Biden screwed us. China is on borrowed time. They can’t out last crap.
China makes deals the same way the Dems do: you can do it their way, or, you can do it their way.
Reagan had a handle on it: trust but verify. Any deal must have regular and surprise audits. Otherwise, forget it. Just ban them for trade with the US. Totally.
Xi is not the kind of guy whom you approach to make a deal. He is the kind of guy who you forced to come crawling on his hands and knees to you, begging for a deal. Any other way, and he will lie cheat, and Steel as much as he possibly can, as evidence by what China has been doing since the 1980s. No, you tariff and otherwise squeeze China, where it is most vulnerable, until they have no choice, but to beg you for some kind of a deal. I think that Trump knows this, but he has to publicly make the effort to do the right thing according to western negotiating tactics. Once those don’t work out, which is just about where we are right now, then he can really turn the screws tight.
Yep, my take too.
Xi is going to have to submit but doesn’t want to appear weak, so PDJT publicly pumps him up.
I say PDJT should do unto China that which Reagan/Bush did to the USSR. Purposely take the regime down without firing a shot. Very Sun Tzu.
Xi is no longer in power and has been missing for two weeks. The CCP is deciding who will be the next leader. It’s likely the Xi’s replacement will be a reformer.
Yes the U.S. is one of the last countries they don’t own so for.
