Poland Elects Trump-Friendly Conservative In Blow To EU Bureaucrats

Polish voters elected a conservative nationalist aligned with the Trump administration to the presidency Monday, dealing a blow to the European Union (EU), according to CNN.

Karol Nawrocki, a member of the right-wing populist Law and Justice Party (PiS), won a narrow victory with 50.89% of the vote over Rafał Trzaskowsk, the liberal mayor of Warsaw, according to CNN. Nawrocki is expected to have good relations with the Trump administration once he takes office, and the election results are likely to stymie Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s vision to more closely align Poland with the EU.

Nawrocki now holds the presidential veto power, which will likely stifle Tusk’s liberalizing ambitions substantially, according to CNN. In May, Nawrocki visited the White House and President Donald Trump, posing for photos and exchanging pleasantries several weeks ahead of the election.

The PiS is staunchly anti-immigration, which made Poland stand out among EU nations during the Syrian Refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016. The party also backs relatively generous welfare programs and is skeptical of Poland’s involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war.

The party also backs relatively generous welfare programs

That's not exactly conservatism, American-style.

and is skeptical of Poland’s involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war.

Poland is next door to Russia, so Poland is involved with the Ukraine war, no matter what. In fact, Poland already had its revolution against Russian oppression, so, sympathizing with the Ukrainians is not far-fetched.

Social programs affect the overall economy. Can't be separated.

My kid is going to Hungary to see her grandfather who has cancer (thank goodness it looks like it’s not terminal). I wouldn’t sign the permission if she were going to Britain or France.

It's wonderful news that Poland, unlike Romania and France, still has free and fair elections.

This might prevent the EU from starting a war with Russia.

Agree, but who claimed there was?

BTW, there is no such thing as small government conservatism in the U.S. either. How do you think we grew to be so large in social programs spending and in accumulating a $37 trillion debt, which will never get paid back? Even republicans and so-called conservatives vote for bigger government. It's not easy to stop.

But at least, we still have the freedom to determine our own future, whereas many other countries don't.
