Massive volcano eruption is imminent amid earthquake surge, leaving major US city on high alert, scientists fear (Alaska’s Mount Spurr)

Is it going to blow — or blow over?

Seismic activity levels on Alaska’s Mount Spurr soared to March levels earlier this week, sparking fear that an eruption could be on the horizon.

“Earthquake activity beneath Mount Spurr remains elevated,” the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) warned in a May 28 report. “Following a steady decline from late March through April, shallow earthquake activity has increased in the past two weeks to March levels of about 100 events per week.”

And while the advisory assured that the “likelihood of an eruption continues to gradually decline,” the 11,000-foot volcano remains at an “elevated state of unrest,” meaning that an “explosive eruption” is still possible.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, by any means,” Matt Haney, a researcher with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, told Alaska Public Media. “There’s still earthquakes happening at Mount Spurr.”

The only city named in the entire story is Anchorage (near the end)...
That must be the “major” city in the headline....

Unless it’s connected to Climate Change, it’s not ‘science’.

Anchorage is just 50 miles east of Mt Spurr. Potential for a
nasty ash mess if it blows.

So... It could blow today, tomorrow or maybe ten thousand tomorrows from now.

The most awesome thing about mother nature... You never know what she’s up to, and to all those who say they do know... You’re full of it.

What an incredibly dishonest “journalist”. The headline...Imminent...then he quotes the observatory who states “... the likelihood of an eruption continues to gradually decline...”. This is near and dear to me as I live southwest of Anchorage and am tired of the fear mongering of this volcano. Ash would be terrible, but not an earth ending event.

Looks like west winds next week.
Air traffic could be a mess if it erupts.

Maybe the DOD should drop a MOAB in it-get it over with fast.

Calif. is overdue for a major earthquake. Perhaps we should do underground nuclear testing on the fault. Do it just b4 Election Day.

Not too hard to guess it must be Anchorage. As of the 2020 census, only 5 places in Alaska had more than 10,000 people. The second largest city is Fairbanks with 32,515. In most states that would not be considered a “major city.”
