American doctors look to relocate to Canada to avoid the Trump administration
NPR ^ | May 29, 2025 | Brett Kelman

Posted on 05/29/2025 9:08:18 PM PDT by DoodleBob

Earlier this year, as President Donald Trump was beginning to reshape the American government, Michael, an emergency room doctor who was born, raised, and trained in the United States, packed up his family and left the country.

Michael now works in a small-town hospital in Canada….He said he feels some guilt that he did not stay to resist the Trump agenda but is assured in his decision to leave. Too much of America has simply grown too comfortable with violence and cruelty, he said.

"Part of being a physician is being kind to people who are in their weakest place," Michael said. "And I feel like our country is devolving to really step on people who are weak and vulnerable."

Michael is among a new wave of doctors who are leaving the United States to escape the Trump administration. In the months since Trump was reelected and returned to the White House…

The Medical Council of Canada said in an email statement that the number of American doctors creating accounts on physiciansapply.ca, which is "typically the first step" to being licensed in Canada, has increased more than 750% over the past seven months compared with the same time period last year — from 71 applicants to 615. Separately, medical licensing organizations in Canada's most populous provinces reported a rise in Americans either applying for or receiving Canadian licenses, with at least some doctors disclosing they were moving specifically because of Trump.

"The doctors that we are talking to are embarrassed to say they're Americans," said John Philpott, CEO of CanAm Physician Recruiting, which recruits doctors into Canada. "They state that right out of the gate: 'I have to leave this country. It is not what it used to be.'"

Probably all from India.

Half the Canadian doctors are Indian already.

Oh I know they picked a partisan doctor, only a highly partisan person would use who is president as the justification to leave the country.. So that’s a given out fo the gate.

The fact this is even being reported as a “Story” shows bias.

The number of apps has gone form 75 to 600+ which is a big increase relative to what it normally is, however 600 doctors investigating (not actually leaving, but just doing the first step to possibly leaving) across this entire country is a big NOTHING in the grand scheme of things.

In 2022 there were 1,0544,734 licensed physicians in the uS.. the AMA that year had an active membership roll of 989,320. 600 leaving the country assuming they all did, is a statistical nothing.

approximately 10k doctors retire every year, and nearly 30% of all doctors are over the age of 60.

Medical Schools graduate about 28k doctors a year.

600 maybe leaving is a non event when taken in the macro scope.

woodbutcher1963, thanks but for the average Joe.

What is the average waiting time in a Canadian hospital?

In 2024, physicians across Canada reported a median wait time of 30.0 weeks between a referral from a GP and receipt of treatment. Up from 27.7 in 2023. This is 222% longer than the 9.3 week wait Canadian patients could expect in 1993.Dec 12, 2024.

All this from a Government Managed Healthcare system, tax payer funded! I should also Google deaths while waiting for service but I won’t.

Credit to Google search.

In USA, 3 weeks to see your GP then 3-6 weeks to see a specialist.

Yup thanks! Imagine just for a hospital stay! Apparently it’s worse for specialized equipment testing such as a MRI.

I am not saying that the Canadian health care system is better than ours. No socialized health care system is.

I am just pointing out for MINOR medical treatments it might be better. IF you need any kind of specialized treatment or surgery you could die waiting. Which is why the rich Canadians come here.

On another point, I know a truck driver out west that goes to the town across from Yuma, AZ in Mexico for dental work.
This is because he does not have dental insurance. He says that they have the most modern equipment. It is much cheaper than the USA because you PAY in CASH or CREDIT CARD.
They do crown in one day.
Apparently, they are also now doing knee replacements.
Again, primarily for people in the USA that do not have health insurance.

I have heard stories like this for years. About people flying down to Costa Rica to have major dental work done. Like when you are getting multiple crowns.
People claim to save enough money to pay for the “vacation”.

I’m sure the Canadian health care system is not paying him anywhere near what he made in the US. I wouldn’t want a liberal loon like him treating me anyway.

How many of them are actually foreign doctors with visa compliance issues or have family members with visa compliance issues that are just trying to get ahead of potential deportation?

Obama is going to fix our health care system. You will be able to keep your plan, and your premiums will go down by an average of $2,000 per year. The 15 years since Obamacare was implemented has more to do with doctors leaving the country than the 3 months of Trump being President.
