Earlier this year, as President Donald Trump was beginning to reshape the American government, Michael, an emergency room doctor who was born, raised, and trained in the United States, packed up his family and left the country.
Michael now works in a small-town hospital in Canada….He said he feels some guilt that he did not stay to resist the Trump agenda but is assured in his decision to leave. Too much of America has simply grown too comfortable with violence and cruelty, he said.
"Part of being a physician is being kind to people who are in their weakest place," Michael said. "And I feel like our country is devolving to really step on people who are weak and vulnerable."
Michael is among a new wave of doctors who are leaving the United States to escape the Trump administration. In the months since Trump was reelected and returned to the White House…
The Medical Council of Canada said in an email statement that the number of American doctors creating accounts on physiciansapply.ca, which is "typically the first step" to being licensed in Canada, has increased more than 750% over the past seven months compared with the same time period last year — from 71 applicants to 615. Separately, medical licensing organizations in Canada's most populous provinces reported a rise in Americans either applying for or receiving Canadian licenses, with at least some doctors disclosing they were moving specifically because of Trump.
"The doctors that we are talking to are embarrassed to say they're Americans," said John Philpott, CEO of CanAm Physician Recruiting, which recruits doctors into Canada. "They state that right out of the gate: 'I have to leave this country. It is not what it used to be.'"

Maybe NPR will relocate, too.
Canada is in the Death Care business. Doctors can see more patients no pressure no complaints.
NPR publishes stuff like this and their CEO falsely declares that they are not biased.
Addition by Subtraction.
Michael, the physician who moved to Canada this year, said he had long been wary of what he describes as escalating right-wing political rhetoric and unchecked gun violence in the United States, the latter of which he witnessed firsthand during a decade working in American emergency rooms.
Michael said he began considering the move as Trump was running for reelection in 2020. His breaking point came on Jan. 6, 2021, when a violent mob of Trump supporters besieged the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the election of Joe Biden as president.
"Civil discourse was falling apart," he said. "I had a conversation with my family about how Biden was going to be a one-term president and we were still headed in a direction of being increasingly radicalized toward the right and an acceptance of vigilantism."
It then took about a year for Michael to become licensed in Canada, then longer for him to finalize his job and move, he said. While the licensing process was "not difficult," he said, it did require him to obtain certified documents from his medical school and residency program.
No. But they probably don’t have to work as hard or as long or spend a third of their income on malpractice insurance. There is also more low skill work available such as physician assisted suicides or sex change operations. And, if someone starts to flatline when your shift is ending . . . NOT your problem.
If he wants to be “kind to people in their weakest place” he will love Canada’s MAID program. (Medical Assistance in Dying.) This is where a doctor is encouraged to talk with his troublesome and costly patients about “have you ever considered assisted suicide?”
I have a feeling these 600 or so “doctors” aren’t the ones that Canadians with money come to the States to get treatment....
Don't let the door hit you on the backside, guys.
I wonder how many patients followed him, that is if he had any.
Feel good story of the day!
>>>As for the 615…
Sooner or later the shock of socialist Healthcare like being settled in remote areas will set in.
Nonsense. Doctors hate the Canadian health service and beg to come to the US.
From one extremist to another...
BREAKING: Anti-Trump Defense IT Specialist Arrested For Attempting to Provide Classified Information to Foreign Government Because He Did Not “Agree or Align with the Values of This Administration”
University teachings, I guess!
So they’re going to take a significant pay cut, get stuck serving under Canada’s broken national health care, and point people in the direction of MAiD...got it.
Sounds like these doctors only have time to catch the fake news, like NPR.
Yes it’s more like health scare
Their leaving is a needed culling of doctors who more likely want to euthanize their patients than cure them. Bye...bye. Turn in your passports and reject your US Citizenship before you leave, losers.
According to people I know in Canada the reason MAY be is that EMERGENCY rooms(where this guy is working) are for actual emergencies.
The problem has nothing to do with the Trump administration. It is the fact that USA ERs are full of ILLEGALS. He is probably tired of treating Gun Shot Wounds in the ER he worked in the USA.
In Europe/Canada people that have a cold/flu/or other minor issues go to a clinic where it is FREE. We do not have these so poor people end up in the ER or the Doc in a Box instead.
yet this is what Obama Care was supposed to fix. It has not. It just made medical care and insurance worse for everyone and more expensive.
At least CVS and Walgreens are now offering medical care at some of their retail establishments. Where go can go see a Nurse Practitioner if you have some minor aliment. I did this for the first time about six months ago. I made an appointment online at the CVS an hour later. I was in and out with a prescription in less than a have hour. Seems like something Walmart might want to get into if they have not already.
The only Doctor I have ever known that moved to Canada was a guy who grew up in Ottawa. He moved back to take care of his parents. After living in NH for years. He did not want to move. He needed to help his parents.
The other main issue is that ALL hospitals are now corporate. Doctors are now just another cog in the health care corporate machine. They spend more time filling out forms on their laptop than actually providing care. At least that is what my GP told me at my last annual physical.
