MADISON, WI -- The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended Dane County Judge Ellen Berz for a week following a complaint brought by the Wisconsin Judicial Commission.
Berz will be suspended without pay starting June 26. The Commission alleged that Berz violated multiple parts of the Code of Judicial Ethics and then admitted to said violations.
The Commission specifically referenced two incidents, one on May 31, 2019 and another on Dec. 13, 2021, in its complaint against Berz.
During the 2019 incident, Berz allegedly used sarcasm towards a defendant and admonished him for asking to move a trial date saying "This Court will not forget."
The Commission said that violated codes requiring judges to treat litigants "with patience, dignity, and courtesy."
In the 2021 incident, Berz allegedly directed a bailiff to leave her courtroom and arrest a defendant who missed a court appearance because they were in a hospital. When the bailiff said they couldn't go, Berz allegedly said she would go to the hospital and arrest the person herself.
Berz then drove to the hospital with the person's attorney, but turned around after the attorney noted that Berz was supposed to remain neutral in the case. Upon returning to the courtroom, Berz ordered a body-only warrant for the defendant.
The Commission said Berz's conduct violated codes requiring judges to treat litigants with respect, perform their duties without bias, act in a manner that promotes public confidence and observe high standards of conduct.
The Commission's Judicial Conduct Panel recommended a weeklong suspension for Berz, given there were only two incidents of alleged misconduct and Berz accepted responsibility for her actions.
Wow! What a concept!
The lunatic actually left the courthouse and went out to arrest someone in the hospital? A judge has no power to go out into the streets and make an arrest.
She’s deranged.
A week?? The judge should be thrown off the court and disbarred!!!
> Berz allegedly directed a bailiff to leave her courtroom and arrest a defendant <
The bailiff refused. And that’s a bit of good news. Too often officers just mindlessly “follow orders”, regardless of how illegal and unconstitutional those orders might be.
And yet....
Federal judges commit far more crimes. Felonies and treasonous acts. And they get away with it.
The article mentions her, Dane County Circuit Court judge Ellen Berz, as an example.
Has to be a liberal judge. Thus the defendant must have been a conservative?
Channeling Doug Piranha?
Some of them think they are Gods gift to mankind.
There’s one in WV that got in the middle of a divorce case and actually illegally entered one of the homes and did an illegal search and seizure.
She got forced out after they filed federal suit against her ass.
Judges are to be not unlike an umpire in baseball.
I’ve seen grown men pull their own heads off rather than see Doug.
Does this apply to Federal judges?
“...without bias, act in a manner that promotes public confidence and observe high standards of conduct.”
Hmmm, does not portend well for the Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge (the Hon. Hannah Dugan) who held the back door for the illegal immigrant to run out of.
They’re either arresting them or shuffling them out the backdoor. Is there nothing judges can’t do?
The judge.
Somebody needs to buy that dude a hair brush.
I have filed judicial conduct complaints against 2 municipal judges. Despite the Commission finding for the complainant less than 2% of the time, I prevailed both times.
I was directed to maintain confidentiality both times. When multiple people started asking me what I did to piss off the first judge, I ended up taking copies the decision letter to the local morning coffee hangout and laminating them to the tables. That shut the gossiping judge and city employees the hell up pretty quickly.
Judges are no longer to be trusted, a sad reality.
“perform their duties without bias, act in a manner that promotes public confidence and observe high standards of conduct.”
This alone should disqualify 95% of the judges in the country.
What a tiny “punishment”!
Smug little b*tch.
