I remember that differential speed study. Seemed like common sense to me.
Same here. I rarely split lanes. There were a couple times when I was waiting for a red light to change, and a car would come up alongside me and hit my motorcycle, and then take off. So it goes both ways, sometimes cars do lane splitting! I haven't ridden a motorcycle for the last couple decades, sold my bike. Wife was happy to see it go.
I assume that lane splitting is legal and reasonable because riding a motorcycle in stop and go traffic would be hard and almost impossible in some cases. I would rather be stuck on the side of two cars instead of to being stuck between the front and back of two cars. In the mid 70s, I rode a motorcycle on the freeways in san jose as a teen, including a few times over the 17 to Santa Cruz, and I guarantee you that me feet never touched the pavement. Stopping was not an option.
That was made legal in Arizona a few years ago. I don't do it myself, and in fact I try to avoid riding in the city these days. With my 70th birthday getting close, I should just sell the Sportster anyway.
That is how my buddy and I evaded a lowrider full of cholos hell bent on destroying us.
This was in Paramount, California. After they cut us off I flipped them the bird. Then they kept slowing down and inviting us to come alongside of them. Yeah, right. They slowed down, so we slowed down. Finally, when they stopped behind a line of cars at a red light, all six of them exited the Chevy Impala. That's when I gunned it and raced right through the middle of them, continuing past, splitting the lane until we reached the intersection. The light turned green and we didn't even slow down.
After a few blocks we ducked down through a residential and out the other side.
No more birds after that.
And THAT is one of the many reasons we bought our place in North Idaho! Here on the SF Peninsula, I drive at or slightly below the speed limit by our local high school and elementary school (25 mph) and I get people behind me pulling half way into the opposing lane to see why I'm going "so slow." Sheesh, people, is it worth killing a kid to save you a minute! Every single time, the next intersection light is red and everybody meets there any way.
My ExpressVPN even blocks still photos from LOTS of sites. It is so annoying. I have to turn it off, reload the page, then remember to turn it back on
‘”Lane splitting” is one of the stupidest things California ever made lawful. This jerk is splitting the lane at least 20 - 25 mph faster than the cars he’s passing within inches of the cars. These “rolling roadblocks” are a CHP strategy to slow traffic prior to some problem up ahead and are not uncommon. The CHP officer was moving to the left when the motorcyclist slammed into the CHP cruiser switching lanes. I’m surprised the guy survived. ‘

No kidding! California also absolved bicyclists from following any traffic laws, and legalized jaywalking - which all the homeless folks in my neighborhood love to do.
Tell me about it.
My addiction was adrenaline and my body is paying for it now.
I still get the craving.
As more are riding, even experienced riders, they have forgotten the rules of the road. No turn signals, weaving in and out of traffic with little room to spare. Everyone needs to RELEARN basic traffic safety. Never block your brake lights. We have some cherry pickers staying at a Motel 6, they hang a tool bucket over a brake/turn light. There is that nutty turnabout, replacing 3-way stops, no one knows who goes first now. People run stop signs when impatient. Run red lights too.
It’s become hazardous to drive.
If it's like our Jersey traffic circles, entering traffic must yield to traffic already in the circle.
DON’T RIDE STONED
