A California Highway Patrol cruiser and a motorcycle collided on Interstate-280 on May 21, sending the rider flying into the center divider.
The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. on the southbound side of I-280 in the Menlo Park area, as the CHP officer was driving in a serpentine pattern to stop traffic ahead of an upcoming crash scene, CHP Sgt. Andrew Barclay told KRON4. Video of the crash shows the motorcyclist driving in-between lanes before entering the path of the winding CHP cruiser.
“The officer was running a traffic break to stop traffic due to a rollover crash up ahead, and all of their emergency lights and siren were activated,” Barclay said. “All other vehicles had yielded to the officer, however the motorcyclist did not.”
The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries in the crash and was not taken to the hospital by paramedics. The CHP deputy was not injured.
ICE agents spotted in Concord, San Francisco immigration court buildings “While the report has not been completed, I can say that California Vehicle Code section 21806(a)(1) states that vehicles must yield the right of way to an authorized emergency vehicle with activated emergency lights and siren,” Barclay said. “Additionally, California Vehicle Code section 21706 requires drivers to remain at least 300 feet behind an emergency vehicle with activated lights and siren. Finally, while lane splitting in California is legal, motorcycle riders must do so safely, and with due regard for surrounding traffic conditions and while obeying all appropriate laws.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
"Lane splitting" is one of the stupidest things California ever made lawful. This jerk is splitting the lane at least 20 - 25 mph faster than the cars he's passing within inches of the cars. These "rolling roadblocks" are a CHP strategy to slow traffic prior to some problem up ahead and are not uncommon. The CHP officer was moving to the left when the motorcyclist slammed into the CHP cruiser switching lanes. I'm surprised the guy survived.
All I can say is...
Just because you “can” do something doesn’t mean you should.
It's called FAFO.
Even if “lane splitting” is legal, doing 50+ mph faster than the vehicles you are “splitting” is suicidal.
That’s too bad. The minor part.
Splitting lanes requires hyper vigilance by the motorcyclist to anticipate and detect a car changing lanes. You have fractions of second to detect and make changes. This motorcyclist was not even normally vigilant, much less hyper vigilant. This guy is a real FAFO idiot.
When I rode in CA many decades ago, I was nervous about splitting lanes when all the cars were stopped at a red light. I rarely did it.
Many years ago I was driving down the 101 Freeway in San Luis Obispo County, CA. A lane splitter ran into the back of a semi truck and his body was completely disintegrated. Off road biking is cool, but IMHO riding on the freeway is suicidal.
I would very rarely do that when I was riding in California. Only when traffic was stopped, and I wasn’t going 110 mph like some knuckleheads do these days.
Never had a problem, but it’s been over 30 years, and texting hadn’t hit the scene yet.
It’s in Colorado now too. Anything Cali does we have to do.
It was done because motorcycle cops wanted to do it.

Absolutely. As a rider, I am NOT a fan of lane splitting.
Lane filtering, though, should be OK (Filtering is lane splitting at traffic lights, when traffic is stopped).

I agree dumbest thing. I get traffic is stopped and want to keep moving. I more for years. I live in California briefly and the lake splitters often were idiots. Not carefully moving through the slow or stalled traffic but wiz by at 40 or 50 mph or more… just absolute stupidity
I rode for years
Excellent!!
Oh snap, that was no accident, CHP saw that guy and took him out.
Looked like the motorcycle didn’t suffer minor injuries, judging from all the shrapnel flying around.
IIRC, the law in California says no more than 10 mph faster than surrounding traffic, or thereabouts.
When I see the "Look Twice, Save A Life" lawn signs around my area, I always think "Look Twice, I Might Be Going Two Or Three Times The Speed Limit."

I consider open carry of a firearm and motorcycle lane splitting to be in the same class of behavior. They may be legal, I understand the arguments in favor of doing them, but regard each as a bad idea in general.
