Opinion - How many more useless deaths before we admit Trump was always right on Ukraine?
Yahoo! News ^ | Sat, May 24, 2025 at 11:00 AM CDT | Douglas MacKinnon

Two serious and literally life or death questions: Since when did trying to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people — including countless children — become something to be criticized? Conversely, when did sending hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers into the teeth of the Russian war machine with absolutely no plausible plan to win become the untouchable go-to policy of certain neoconservatives, many on the left and a fair number of editorial writers?

I thought of these questions while reading two recent columns. The first is by Rich Lowry from the New York Post, titled “Trump is getting the Ukraine-Russia war all wrong — and he’s making it even harder on himself.” The other is by former diplomat Bridget Brink in the Detroit Free Press, titled “I was U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. I resigned because of Trump’s foreign policy.”

There is much Lowry has written over the years that I believe to be spot on. That said, I have disagreed with much he has written about Ukraine since the start of the war — his latest column included. Some believe Lowry to be a megaphone for the neocon class, which always seems to be advocating for the U.S. military to engage in “forever wars.” Lowry was also the former editor of National Review, a magazine that in March 2016 ran an editorial titled “Never Trump” and that seemed to become the epicenter of the “Never Trump” movement for certain neocons and entrenched, elitist Republicans.

The constant theme for those criticizing Trump’s consistent stance against the Ukraine war and a much-needed ceasefire is that Putin is evil and must be defeated...

Which encourages Zelensky to try to start WWIII by assassinating Putin, which causes a really pissed off Putin to rain hell down on Ukraine which causes the German leftist globalonialist to authorize German cruise missiles to be launched against Russia which will cause Russia to attack Germany which will start WWIII.

I hope Trump has called Germany and the rest of the EU and told them knock it off or we are outta here and you are on your own.

"Experts” eagerly pushed for war who had no skin in the game. Meaning they were not in the military, they would not be walking point in the coming combat, nor would any of their relatives or friends.

Where do the experts think ground zero for WWIII will be?

This business with Ukraine is an obscenity, and if they won’t stop, then we need to back away with some finality.

You do realize that Russia is the aggressor here? Ukraine is trying to defend it's territory.

Walt Disney wouldn’t recognize what he started, and William F. Buckley would be appalled at what National Review has become.

Lol, since when has Douglas MacKinnon been right about anything? All he does is throw wild guesses around to get attention.

The Democratic ticket Trump doesn’t want

Pete Buttigieg’s recent popularity surge in Iowa and New Hampshire has many speculating that President Trump could face a Democratic ticket in 2020 that he doesn’t want and fears the most — the South Bend, Ind., mayor and another candidate recently in the spotlight, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii.....

Nice write up.

It’s not an act of patriotism to advocate for the death and destruction of ones own nation and people.

People like that ALWAYS seem to pretend like they are patriotic as they lead their nation into ruin. They shroud themselves in their nations flag.

Those that oppose them are presented as treasonous, miscreants...

The horrible thing about this war that no one can honestly get around is that it was 100% avoidable. There was no need to expand NATO. There was no immediate security risk to us or even Ukraine for that matter. Russia didn’t start building up its military forces along the Ukraine border until AFTER we decided to move forward with our NATO plans for Ukraine in October 2021.

It was highly probable that this war would happen with our NATO East ward expansion plans, and the outcome was very likely to be what it is today.

Unless we assume that our true motive was to weaken Russia on the world stage (that may have been achieved) and Ukraine is just a proxy to be played like a pawn, this war was likely to end in failure, i.e. our political and military goals are not met, which they are not.

How long do we keep the bleeding going? That depends on how long we let Mr. Z not settle things. Let’s be real, Mr. Z was installed by us, and Ukraine is surviving because of money, logistics, Intel, training, weapons, even mercenaries we allow to travel there to fight. It’s all just a question of how much we want to push on Mr. Z to end this.

Obviously we don’t want Ukraine to end up getting screwed over in a peace deal. But the reality is that Russia now has the initiative, manpower, war manufacturing output. We caused this war, and Russia paid a high cost taking much of the ground. Russia sees much of Ukraine as historically theirs, there is a large Russian ethnic population in many of the areas taken by the Russiansbtoday... The Russians are not in a position where they are going to compromise in an extremely favorable way for Ukraine. This is NOT going to end with Ukraine getting it’s land back, assuming you see it as theirs to begin with.

In preparation for an invasion by Ukraine? LOL!

Pretty much EVERYONE on the Left and EVERY Neoconservative and the LARGE MAJORITY of editorial writers.

“I hope Trump has called Germany and the rest of the EU and told them knock it off or we are outta here and you are on your own.”

Trump only needs to call Hegseth to stop Germany, or at least make their missiles useless if they are launched. Germany doesn’t have the means to launch them with effectiveness as that requires intelligence assets.

“Where do the experts think ground zero for WWIII will be?”

If the Neocons win against Trump, it will be Ukraine and then Europe, so at least their Muslim problem will mostly get eradicated.

“You do realize that Russia is the aggressor here? Ukraine is trying to defend it’s territory.”

That’s the point of getting NATO out, so Ukraine will have the chance to defend their territory, or maybe, just maybe, come to their senses.

We caused this war.

Did we provoke the Bear? Perhaps.

But Putin made the decision to invade Ukraine. He is responsible for that.

The Putin MIND-READERS here would disagree with you as they have the ability to channel Putin’s thoughts and have essentially concluded that all was well in Ukraine on Feb 23, 2022, but Putin woke up the next morning in a bad mood and thus decided to invade Ukraine, for kicks.

I guess Churchill wasn’t a patriot as well. In 1940 there seemed little chance that Briton could survive….
