Rubio says US, NATO seek more Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine

The United States is working with NATO partners to locate additional Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on May 20 during Senate testimony on the State Department's budget.

Ukraine has consistently warned that its current air defense capacity is insufficient to counter the scale of Russia's intensified missile and drone attacks.

"The U.S. is looking for Patriot batteries to be able to transfer from other NATO nations into Ukrainian hands," Rubio told lawmakers, adding that no country is willing to give up these systems, and the U.S. cannot produce them quickly enough.

Kyiv has requested more Patriots to shield cities and critical infrastructure.

In an April 13 interview with CBS News, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to buy 10 U.S.-made Patriot systems for $15 billion.

"We will find the money and pay for everything," he said.

Despite Kyiv's appeals, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the request, accusing Zelensky of "always looking to purchase missiles" and falsely blaming Ukraine for provoking the war.

The Patriot is a high-precision, U.S.-made surface-to-air missile platform capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats. Zelensky has repeatedly said Ukraine needs at least seven more systems to defend its most at-risk regions.

The New York Times reported on May 4, citing unnamed U.S. officials, that a Patriot system currently based in Israel will be transferred to Ukraine following refurbishment. Western allies are also reportedly reviewing whether to reallocate systems from Germany or Greece.

As long as they pay for them, no problem. No more freebies.

Ukraine has consistently warned that its current air defense capacity is insufficient to counter the scale of Russia's intensified missile and drone attacks.

So maybe it would have been wise for them to engage in peace negotiations instead of attacking Putin's helicopter?

Bearing in mind, The Kyiv Independent is state media.

Despite Kyiv's appeals, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the request, accusing Zelensky of "always looking to purchase missiles" and falsely blaming Ukraine for provoking the war.

Trump has absolutely had it with Zelensky.

When asked about sending more Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, Trump says “you don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size, and then hope that people give you some missiles”.

Zelensky’s clock is about to strike midnight.

Russia has destroyed 40+ Patriot launchers and 10 radars in Ukraine, wiping out 4-5 full batteries worth $4.8-6B. With only 8-9 batteries left, Ukraine faces a harsh choice: protect key targets or leave critical infrastructure exposed. NATO may rush more Patriots or alternatives.

The U.S. has sent three Patriot air defense batteries to Ukraine by May 2025. The perception that Ukraine never runs out of Patriots likely stems from continuous resupply efforts, including 90 missiles from Israeli stocks in January 2025 and 100 from Germany in May 2025, approved by the U.S. International support from countries like Germany and Romania, along with maintenance and rotation of systems, sustains Ukraine’s capabilities. However, exact numbers are hard to verify due to national security concerns, and challenges like cost and escalation risks persist.

I think that’s what’s going to happen. The EU will buy them from the US.
“Western European leaders are looking into the possibility of purchasing American weapons and giving them to Ukraine once the arms transfers approved by the previous administration of US President Joe Biden run out…..”

Mertz of Germany offered 125 Himars to Ukraine and they are being shipped. NATO knows that these systems and their missiles no longer rule the battlefield from afar. Russia put into orbit a series of Satellites in January and February, and they finally started using them about a month ago.

Over a period of 14 days, Russia destroyed 10 Himars or 5 two system teams, within 4-10 minutes of a launch.

Rubio might as well get them out of inventory and make some money on the failing technology.

The real problem is that Ukriane needs 500 missles a month which used to be a year’s production.

Ukraine has a nasty habit of firing these into Russia to hit towns.

The US has been forwarnded. Trump was able to keep Putin from reacting to Biden’s NATO crew lobbing missiles into Russia.

The last one flew just before an Oresnick missle with inert dummy nonexplosive payloaded rounds pummled the old Ukrainian USSR Blastic Missile facility that was several stories underground. One missile with 36 independent chunks of steel shook it to into the ground. The next time they will filled with High Explosive warheads.

Trump stopped the NATO missiles form flying into Russia and Russia hasn’t used Oresnick as a result.

Zelinski and NATO may have poked the bear one time too many with an assasination attempt yesterday.

If Russia were to fire one of these monsters every 2 hours for 48 hours at Kiev, the stream of people fleeing into Poland to would collasp the Azov government.

“Only if Europeans will pay for all military hardware.”

If they European feel that they no longer need air defense and can give it all to Ukraine (just to have it destroyed by Russia’s upgraded Islander Missiles), then why are they acting PARANOID about Russia’s intentions and are calling for their own military?

Answer: Their military will not be for fighting Russia.

Think about it.

NO!

Zelensky already knows he will win, so he doesn’t need anything more.

“...and the U.S. cannot produce (the Patriots) quickly enough.”

Mainly because China no longer sells us the Rare Earth that they need, not other critical piece-parts.

Something that should have been considered by the Neocons before starting their war against a nuclear superpower.

You give the impression that publication is quoting Trump for today, when they were mentioning what he said in mid-April.

And you believe Putin was all set to play nice? Putin has, so far, shown little interest in ending the conflict so there’s plenty of blame to go around for both sides.
