And you believe Putin was all set to play nice? Putin has, so far, shown little interest in ending the conflict so there’s plenty of blame to go around for both sides.

No, I don't think Putin was all set to play nice.
I've been following this - Putin has done far more than Ukraine to avoid ever getting to this point. Zelensky passed a decree in 2022 making it illegal to negotiate with Putin. Putin has asked repeatedly for negotiations and Zelensky points to his decree and says, "It's illegal for me to negotiate." Even to save Ukraine for Ukrainians, Zelensky won't negotiate. It looks like peace negotiations are going to start, so Zelensky conducts a cross border raid. In the raiding party, mercenaries who fire on civilians and ambulances.
Heading for peace, Zelensky gets himself thrown out of the White House. Heading for peace again, Zelensky brags that he now has missiles that can reach Moscow. There are other examples - but they all have the same theme. It's Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie. So no, Putin isn't 'nice' but he has wanted negotations from the start. But NATO wanted its proxy war and they decided no negotations.
