Donald J. Trump’s victory in 2024 was not an outlier.
It was the culmination of continuous gains by Republicans in much of the country each time he has run for president, a sea of red that amounts to a flashing warning sign for a Democratic Party out of power and hoping for a comeback.
The steady march to the right at the county level reveals not just the extent of the nation’s transformation in the Trump era but also the degree to which the United States now resembles two countries charging in opposite directions.
Mr. Trump has reordered America’s political divide both geographically and demographically.
Republicans are overwhelmingly making gains in working-class counties.
Democrats are improving almost exclusively in wealthier areas.
It is the same story by education: Republicans are running up the score in counties where fewer people have attended college.
Democrats are gaining ground in a small sliver of the best-educated enclaves.
All told, Mr. Trump has increased the Republican Party’s share of the presidential vote in each election he’s been on the ballot in close to half the counties in America — 1,433 in all — according to an analysis by The New York Times.
It is a staggering political achievement, especially considering that Mr. Trump was defeated in the second of those three races, in 2020.
By contrast, Democrats have steadily expanded their vote share in those three elections in only 57 of the nation’s 3,100-plus counties.
These counties, which we are calling “triple-trending,” offer a unique and invaluable window into how America has realigned — and still is realigning — in the Trump era. They vividly show, in red and blue, the stark changes in the political coalitions of the two parties.
The scale of Mr. Trump’s expanding...

We'll see. They seem to be engaging in a low key "stop Trump" campaign of inactivity and lack of support, resulting in stalled nominations and legislation and no support for DOGE or anything else he's doing. At some point the people will take note, like they did in 2017 when the GOP refused to honor their promise for years to repeal / replace Obamacare. That resulted in the GOP intentionally throwing the 208 midterms so the dems could take over the blocking. And here we go again.

The “rich” and the “well educated” think that the country should be ruled by the rich and well educated.
I think that normal Americans believe that the problems facing the country have largely been created by the actions of the “rich” and “well educated” and we would like those people to have less power.
Democrats are proud to be “rich” and “well educated”.
Republicans are proud to be normal.
It’s doubtful that Democrats will never make a comeback, given the penchant of Republicans to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory far too often. And when Democrats do eventually regain power, they will be even worse than we’ve ever seen before.
Yep. As I have stated the leftist have gone so far already the only places they have left to go are either Red Guards, Khmer Rouge or Ingsoc.
So they are saying 2020 was stolen.
It was.
“And when Democrats do eventually regain power, they will be even worse than we’ve ever seen before.”
No question in my mind when the Overton Window has adjusted “just right” Democrats will go for a Night of the Broken Glass type event against mostly Republican leaning constituencies.
They have for years wanted to turn America into the next post-Rhodesia Zimbabwe and they are hell bent in making it happen one way or another.
Years ago Rush was reading from the NYT. He called the Times the “Democrat paper of record”.
The article said Democrats planned to abandon the union/working class and focus on the ultra wealthy, the ultra poor and urban hipsters (think LGBT2SIA+ and “Free Palestine” crowd).
Well they succeeded.
I guess folk at the Times don’t read their own paper.
I'd like to see the Congressional blue/red map. Maybe I'll look it up after I get home from work.
First of all- good post. Thanks
For me this is complicated stuff. I loathe current Democrat politics and Democrat policies. The voter movement being described fits right in with my wishes for better government.
Unfortunately, I don’t trust any politicians from either party. I like the Republicans better- right now. I generally side with what I believe to be the working center of the electorate- right now.
I can pretty easily imagine a future where I am more worried about Republicans than Democrats. Too much movement in one political direction spooks me a little even when it is headed my way.
This was "The Future of the Obama Coalition" by Thomas B. Edsall, November 27, 2011, which Rush referenced many times. Ditching the white working class was Obama's deliberate policy, and it has backfired tremendously.
Good on you for remembering this, it has been completely memory-holed by the entire political class.
There is fantasy talk about President Trump running for a third term, but we all know that can't happen, and even joking about it will give the Democrats agitprop for their news outlets.
Here is what President Trump SHOULD do for a de facto third term:
President Trump should run for Congress in Florida's 22nd Congressional District (which contains Mar-a-Lago) with the aim of being elected Speaker of the House. The seat is currently held by Democrat Lois Frankel, who took the seat from Allen West in 2013.
Trump doesn't need to be a member of Congress to become Speaker of the House, but being a Congressman would give him more credibility. Trump as Speaker (and someone like JD Vance as President), would make Speaker Trump the de facto President (and party "kingmaker"). Speaker Trump would guide the legislative agenda and budget process, while President Vance would handle the military and foreign affairs. Speaker Trump would push the squishy Senate to follow the House's legislative lead.
There is precedent for this. President John Quincy Adams served nine terms in the House of Representatives after his presidency. President Trump would only need to run for one term to boost enthusiasm and turnout in 2028 with a national campaign to stump for Republican House candidates who would support a vote for Trump for Speaker. No more Chip Roy's to muck things up.
This would give "lame duck" President Trump just the excuse he can use for holding rallies throughout the 2028 election season and still remain relevant into the first two years of the next presidential term.

I think something similar has happened. John Adams maybe became a Congresscritter after being President. I’ll aks Gronk.
It’s all a con. The U.S. Chamber of Crypto-Fascist, Crony-Commerce’s mega-donor class of Big Government, Big Banks, and Big Businesses rules.
AS IT’S CLEAR THERE ARE HUGE NUMBERS OF OTHERS WHO STILL FAIL TO GRASP THE MESS THE DEMOCRATS & RINOS HAVE CREATED, PLEASE SHARE WIDELY.

As Department of Government Efficiency continues pursuing its mission, we are astonished to learn just how extensive the tentacles of the Deep State/Intelligence Community reach. It almost seems as if every ox in the country is getting gored, as Federal expenditures get examined.
Not just for the Federal workforce, but we are learning that thousands of seemingly innocuous business are now threatened by the coming restrictions in Federal money getting sloshed around. Universities are the obvious example, but accounting firms, IT firms, law offices, domestic and international charities and Big Pharma are beginning to scream that their livelihood is being shut off.
Who would have imagined how much of the Great American Public is totally dependent on the $7 trillion borrowed dollars that the Federal government has been handing out like candy? DOGE loses its public appeal as people begin to realize how it will impact them. As I have said repeatedly, waste, fraud and abuse have a substantial Democrat Party constituency. The Democrat Party and Congress have bought a lot of goodwill through free money for little return.
Making America Great Again is not as popular as it was earlier, when the first fraud and abuse were being identified. Now our citizenry is beginning to comprehend that President Trump and DOGE are serious. Well, that’s what they voted for. American Greatness does not flow from government handouts.

President Trump says illegal alien criminals must be deported. Democrats and Big News Media adamantly insist that immigrants commit less crime than native-born Americans. That is true, if you clarify you are talking only about LEGAL immigrants. They are so grateful to be welcomed in the country that they have little motivation to become criminals [Ilhan Omar excepted].
Illegals, on the other hand, are frequently criminals before they even arrive, coming from countries with a culture of violent crime. In border states, nearly half of all incarcerated criminals are illegals. Similar in Blue Hive sanctuary cities. It seems that people who break our laws to get here are not inclined to obey our laws, once they arrive.
The Democrat Party tries to conflate the law-abiding nature of legal immigrants as an excuse to oppose President Trump’s efforts to deport violent criminal illegals. And Big News Media are cheering them on. That is the nature of discourse in our country these days.

It’s been remade…
The prayer is that it be sustained…
Lifting this up to God right now!
Delusional.
Kamala Harris, one of the worst major party candidates in USA history, lost by 230,000 votes, in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
If Kamala had chosen Josh Shapiro, a popular center-left governor of Pennsylvania, for Vice President, and if Kamala had totally focused on Third Party Democrat voters in WI, MI, and PA, like Biden focused in 2020, Kamala would have won the election.
Trump was the ONLY Republican who could win a national election in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
As of May 2025, there are NO Republicans who can win a national election in 2028.
