Is Trump Trying to Destroy Harvard?
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 23, 2025 | WSJ Editorial Board

Posted on 05/24/2025 6:27:32 AM PDT by karpov

The Trump Administration has frozen billions in federal grants to Harvard University, threatened its tax-exempt status, and sought to dictate its curriculum and hiring. Now the government seems bent on destroying the school for the offense of fighting back. And for what purpose?

That’s how we read the Department of Homeland Security’s move Thursday to bar foreign students from attending the world-renowned institution. That’s 6,800 students, or a quarter of Harvard’s student body, whose futures are suddenly in disarray. It’s also a short-sighted attack on one of America’s great competitive strengths: Its ability to attract the world’s best and brightest.

The latest assault began when DHS demanded that Harvard turn over sundry records on its foreign students, including whether any had participated in illegal activity or left the university owing to “dangerous or violent activity or deprivation of rights.”

Some of its record requests are reasonable, but some overreached by requiring private student information. DHS also gave Harvard all of two weeks to respond. If it failed to do so, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said she would “automatically withdraw” the school’s certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. “The withdrawal will not be subject to appeal.”

The SEVP program lets non-citizens enroll at universities on student visas. DHS can bar universities from the program if they fail to comply with “recordkeeping, retention, reporting and other requirements” on foreign students. Harvard says it responded with “information required by law” within two weeks and handed over more records on May 14.

Ms. Noem deemed Harvard’s response unsatisfactory and kicked the school from the program. This means foreign students will have to leave the country in short order or find another U.S. college that will take them.

Most of Harvard’s foreign students are enrolled in graduate programs.

Years ago, I read that the reason America went to war with Iraq was to scare Saudi Arabia.

Maybe..maybe not.

In this case, I doubt the government is bent on destroying Harvard. It’s trying to scare other schools that don’t have a $50bn+ endowment.

It might work.

Was there ever a time when the Wall Street Urinal was not in favor of flooding the country with foreigners, including Chicoms?

Harvard is destroying itself, it needs no help from anyone.

Harvard is the conduit for the British Crown in their lost colonies. Of course Trump needs to destroy it, and make it a part of the history of the Boston Tea Party.

We are 2 separate countries. The left believes what it wants and nothing will knock them off their thinking. NOTHING.
I’m thinking we are too far gone to save this sinking ship.

“Was there ever a time when the Wall Street Urinal was not in favor of flooding the country with foreigners, including Chicoms?”

The rich don’t think their wealth can be federally taxed.

Import enough leftists and it will be.

Wealth can be taxed monthly at a small percentages (.01% to .03%) and rebates given on the excesses above the lowest state rate.

But it would be so difficult to calculate! The rich will be given the option to pay ‘estimated’ amounts.

WSJ has been eternally vigilant in supporting unfettered immigration. They have never supported any restrictions.

There's your answer... not sure why a college with an endowment of $52B needs Government funding... but if they want to make up their own rules... they can. But don't expect assistance from the current administration.

The percentage of criminal Harvard students is small.

The percentage of troublesome Harvard students is small.

China’s politburo must be laughing at their good luck that their main adversary is hamstringing itself—first with tariffs that make its firms less competitive, and now with an assault on immigrant talent.

I'm surprised by the tariff statement as it suggests that the WSJ Board doesn't understand how tariffs work. Trump is taking short run slings and arrows from ignorant people to the long run benefit of the country. Tariffs raise the price of imported goods. Those price increases will make it more attractive for US companies to manufacture competitive products, but that takes time. To most politicians, the long run is their term of office, which warps political decisions that affect businesses. Alas, the average US consumer has little interest in the long run and is more concerned about their own self-interest than that of their children.

Oh look, another TDS “editiorial board” article from the premiere establishment rag.

Whenever the snivelers at the WSJ are afraid to put their name(s) to a screed, it goes out as the editorial board.

Wonder who’s carrying them, à la Besos carrrying the Washington Post. Silent “partner?”

They don’t make money selling papers.

“by requiring private student information”

Supply the information you feel is proper.

If you guess wrong, a courtroom date awaits.

Remember, discovery is common in civil law practice.
