The importance of early detection for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, but early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes and quality of life. When caught in its early stages, prostate cancer is highly treatable, and patients have a wider range of options available to them. This is why regular screening and early detection are crucial for men's health.

Here are some important benefits of early prostate cancer detection:

More treatment options When prostate cancer is detected early, patients may be eligible for less invasive treatments, such as active surveillance, focal therapy, or minimally invasive surgery. Early-stage prostate cancer may not require immediate treatment, allowing patients to avoid potential side effects and complications. Higher survival rates The 5-year survival rate for localized prostate cancer (cancer that hasn't spread beyond the prostate) is nearly 100%. Early detection and treatment can prevent the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body, significantly improving long-term survival rates. Better quality of life Early treatment of prostate cancer can help preserve urinary and sexual function. Minimally invasive treatments often result in faster recovery times and fewer side effects compared to more advanced treatments. Catching prostate cancer early can reduce the emotional burden and uncertainty associated with a later-stage diagnosis. Regular prostate cancer screening, typically through a combination of PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams (DRE), can help detect the disease in its early stages. Men should discuss their individual risk factors and screening recommendations with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate approach.

If Jill told the world Joe had prostrate cancer, he would’ve had to concede the nomination to some other Democrat. By keeping it hidden and avoiding treatment to hide it, they managed to keep the campaign going... If he was elected, Jill would’ve run the country until his ultimate demise.

I have PC that was caught early because of my yearly PSA testing. Due to earlier non-cancer related surgeries, the doctors informed me I was a far better candidate for SBRT and ADT (hormone therapy) than surgery.

Now it’s nearly 18 months later and my PSA has dropped to a level of 0.064 from over 10, and the earlier side effects have dissipated. Apart from a little fatigue and some uncomfortable “hot flushes,” I’m nearing a full recovery.

We should all be thankful for modern medicine.

With a 10 PSA at 64 years old 14 years ago, I decided to never get a PSA test again, and I never have regretted it...

A 10 PSA is high but doesn’t necessarily mean its cancer. BHP is also a factor in PSA levels.

But, doctors don’t like to take action (or is it insurance companies) for PSA’s under 4. Mine was riding in the 3.0-3.5 range for several years, then suddenly spiked to 3.9 and three months later 5.2. I opted for referral to a urologist and had an MRI and later a biopsy that revealed cancer. Encapsulated, thank God, but not addressing is how it can eventually metastasize.

I was about to say that I just had a colonoscopy last year, but with a little research found that procedure does not detect prostate cancer.

re: “but early detection”

... news of it can be suppressed in the case of a feeble-minded senile old codger (and his wife) who desperately want to hold on to power ...

“I was about to say that I just had a colonoscopy last year, but with a little research found that procedure does not detect prostate cancer.”

No. You have to have a prostrate biopsy for that, which could cause you to end up in the emergency room getting antibiotics through every orifice of your body for several hours, and may very well screw things up that I won’t get in to. I’ve had 2. They are...unpleasant.

Obamacare mandates free annual physicals. There is a list of tests everyone gets, a list of extra tests for women, a list for children, and nothing for men. Not even PSA. When I was on Obamacare, I had to pay for my own PSA test. Nobody cares about men’s heath or the fact that we live 5 years less than women. Not even men.

Well, sticking your head in the sand is an option, and you are entitled to do it. But it is not my option.

If you get a prostrate biopsy you won’t get cancer? Cool.
