Members of law enforcement say no tax on overtime would be a “huge advantage” to them, and the White House shared their remarks following the “big, beautiful” bill jumping a key hurdle in the U.S. House on Sunday.

The Trump White House shared a video of members of law enforcement explaining what no tax on overtime would do for them. One said it would be a “huge advantage to law enforcement across the country.”

“We work sometimes 100 plus hours a pay period. It’s a lot of time taken away from the family. So that would be pretty special,” another member of law enforcement said, as another noted that it would be a “nice” to have that gift, as many of them are working a “tremendous” amount of overtime due to understaffing.

“No tax on overtime for officers is a big deal,” one said.

Another said no tax on overtime would help senior officers stay “a little longer” to help guide others in the department.

Sure, overtime for them is one the biggest government/union scams going, cops, firemen, all sorts of government people are getting rich and padding their pensions with overtime.

“Senior Los Angeles fire captain Jason Getchius had a salary of $169,764 in 2022, the latest figures provided by the city. But by racking up $502,681 in overtime pay, he was able to earn an eye-popping total of $792,467.
San Francisco sheriff’s lieutenant Ronald Terry had a salary of $179,676. With $374,503 in overtime pay, he earned a total of $738,432 in 2022.
Lington Gordon, an electric crew foreman in Santa Clara, made $703,621 with $363,013 overtime, and Oakland police sergeant Timothy Dolan earned $699,345 with $376,998 overtime.
Since 2019, Dolan has earned almost $2.3 million and Gordon $2,231,958.”

“On a per-worker basis, overtime pay is up 34% from 2019 to 2022 – almost doubling the inflation rate of 18.2% over the same period.
In the past decade, overtime has more than doubled from $4.3 billion to $8.8 billion.
Overtime per worker since 2013 is up 80.5%”

In Massachusetts...some of the nicest and biggest homes in any given town are owned by police.

The overtime there is a massive scam...and a cop that is salaried for 80-90k takes home like 180k-200k after overtime.

Why?

Because one of the biggest parts of it is Mass prevents “Flagmen” from directing traffic. So a cop has to do it.

No big deal i guess right?

Well.....if you a phone company that need to do a 15 minute repair on some wires.....you will need to hire a cop to direct traffic.

Even if you are there for only 15 minutes...along with the cop...you must pay him 4 hours time and a half. So four hours of time and a half for potential 15-30 minutes of directing traffic...not bad right?

Also…if the detail goes 1 minute over 4 hours…then you need to pay for eight hours…even if it was only one minute over the four hour mark.

Pretty good deal/racket...right?

Actually it is. Unionized government employees are already grossly overpaid.

Then pensions are based on overtime and mysteriously, overtime picks up in the last few years of service to juice up pension payment. These schemes will bankrupt municipalities.

Salaried employees that typically work more than 40 hours a week get screwed as well.

Lifeguards, government tradesmen, everyone.

“Top-Paid LA Lifeguards Earned Up To $510,283 In 2021”
“Daniel Douglas was the most highly paid and earned $510,283, an increase from $442,712 in 2020. As the “lifeguard captain,” he out-earned 1,000 of his peers: salary ($150,054), perks ($28,661), benefits ($85,508), and a whopping $246,060 in overtime pay.

The second highest paid, lifeguard chief Fernando Boiteux, pulled down $463,517 – up from $393,137 last year.

Our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com found 98 LA lifeguards earned at least $200,000 including benefits last year, and 20 made between $300,000 and $510,283. Thirty-seven lifeguards made between $50,000 and $247,000 in overtime alone.

And it’s not only about the cash compensation. After 30 years of service, LA lifeguards can retire as young as 55 on 79-percent of their pay.”

My rule of thumb: The more exceptions the tax code has, the more unfair it is.

And this “no taxes on overtime” is an exception. Say you clear $50,000 per year running your own landscaping business. No overtime, as it’s your own business.

I make $50,000 per year, too. I work in a factory. $10,000 is overtime pay.

All else being equal, we should pay the same amount in taxes. But under this proposal, we won’t.

Police OT is the greatest scam going for the politically connected cops in the ‘units’ or in the upper echelons of the Department, who essentially do nothing useful or are ‘on call’ or some such nonsense while getting paid to sit in an office playing on their computers.

The best cops on the job are the ones you see sitting in a marked car answering the radio because they don’t have the clout to get out of Patrol. Most don’t even want to work overtime because they can’t wait to get away from the BS of ungrateful bosses and the ‘public’.

Anecdotal stories like these in the comments aside, there’s one reason for eliminate OT taxation (and SocSec, and tips, etc.): putting extra money in the hands of people generates more economic activity (and net more tax revenue), while putting more money in the hands of Government invites waste, fraud, and abuse.

I’m no fan of bad cops and I know there are some crooked people everywhere who have no problem cheating taxpayers out of their hard earned money. However, I have to believe that most are not that way and anyone who puts their life on the line everyday to protect us, including cops, firefighters/EMS, and the military deserve every penny they get and more.

They are doing this legally, they unionize against the citizens and then use that voting block power to control the local government and make themselves rich.

I read this:
Under a bill introduced by Sens. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) on May 6, the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act, individual workers would be able to deduct up to $10,000 in overtime pay, while married couples would be able to deduct up to $20,000. The break would phase out high-earners once individual adjusted gross income reaches $100,000 or a married couple’s income reaches $200,000.

From a Massachusetts perspective....I would Imagine that most cops from Boston, Brooklyne, Quincy, Brockton...ect...

Yeah...those guys and gals probably want to get the hell out there the minute their shift is up because of the BS.

The Cops I’ really talking about are the ones from the sleepy little towns in the south shore and western mass.

Also…true story…Mass passed law where flagmen COULD direct traffic for roads under 45 mph….and when companies started using this…cops started ARRESTING flagmen.

Sometimes you wonder who is actually in control of things.

I have not heard about the idea of no tax on overtime.

Would it apply to people like Elon Musk who work 80 hours per week?

Could a person work 80 hours every other week and none in between?

he is on salary, doesn’t get overtime.

the way to avoid this is get rid of hourly wage.
