After Tiffany Slaton was miraculously found alive on Wednesday following three weeks lost in the Sierra, today’s question was: How?
According to Slaton herself, a lot of leeks. She’s a trained forager and permaculturist, and leeks are both bountiful in the Sierra and nutritious. So nutritious that her bloodwork was in remarkable shape at the hospital, she said during a press conference on Friday. Her eyes, however, took some damage from an extended time in the blinding white snow, requiring sunglasses in the aftermath.
“How did I avoid death? I’m pretty good at foraging,” Slaton said during her first public appearance on Friday. Her comments were peppered with good spirits and occasional solemn remarks, such as when she said, “On many occasions, I fought nature and lost.”
She also spoke about the thoughts that went through her mind when she realized she was in trouble.
“I would rather live than have to deal with my parents seeing that I failed in such a dumb way,” she said.
Slaton was found alive in a cabin at the Vermilion Valley Resort in the Sierra National Forest. The owner left the doors unlocked through the winter just in case some lost soul needed protection to survive the harsh elements.

“Vermilion Valley Resort (VVR) is a hiking-friendly resort located in the High Sierra Nevada mountains of California, nestled between Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks. The resort offers a range of overnight accommodations, a full-service restaurant, and a well-stocked camp store, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an off-grid getaway with a touch of legendary hospitality.”
Whipepo saved her sorry butt.
When do we get to the cultural appropriation part?
A few thoughts on this:
Miraculous that she survived.
I had no idea leeks grew wild in the Sierra. Sierra Nevada Natural History (Storer and Usinger, 1963) mentions Allium validum, the swamp onion. “Several species of wild onion grow in the Sierra. This, the commonest, has a strong garlic odor. The fibrous bulbs may be used to flavor hearty camp soup or stew.” (pp. 73-74)
The book “French Women Don’t Get Fat” recommends a weekend of eating plain leek soup in order to reset one’s appetite and weight loss goals.

When I lived in Oregon a decade ago there was a law that if someone broke into or used your cabin to survive then it was completely legal under Oregon Laws.
I don’t think it was very smart of her to go WHERE she went in late spring. Alone, also.
IIRC, that’s the same unwritten policy that is (used to be) c coming in in Alaska.
In a high trust society this makes perfect sense.
Reminds me of the Nordic "the right to roam."

I don’t think hiking alone is a good idea.
I would have died the first 24 hours. I have no doubt about that fact.
Looks like nice aspirational middle class family. Not at all problematic.
Hell the only black I have ever heard of get lost in the woods. Camping and hiking Not usual black activities.
Maine too
That post is really out of place, some of your inner self you should make an effort to avoid sharing in public discussions, even if you can’t fix it.
She’d be dead without that cabin.
She was only at about 7,650′ elevation in the Sierras. There would be some snow but not that much. The temperatures tend to be mild in the winter compared to locations farther north and she had water and shelter. I expect only food and keeping hope alive up were the challenges. I assume there was some food in the cabin or other buildings.
It’s a totally Woke post given the current state of political discourse.
I guess all of the recent commercials depicting blacks as scuba divers, mountain climbers and outdoor enthusiasts were correct after all
Every man’s right...
That post was out of place as well, what even led you to a thread about a winter mountain rescue of a serous hiker?
The cabin was a seasonal tent/part tent resort cabin, it was probably stripped and cleaned of any foods or anything to attract or be damaged by bears or mice, or other wild animals.
“It’s not unusual for bears to invite themselves into the tents at the Vermilion Valley Resort, but one of the cabins was unexpectedly occupied on Wednesday when the resort’s owner, Christopher Gutierrez, went to check on the property.”
You are not “serous”.
When do we get to the cultural appropriation?
