Russia tells Ukraine: We could fight another 21 years

Russia told Ukraine it could fight for at least another 21 years during peace talks that ended in acrimony in Istanbul.

Vladimir Medinsky, a Kremlin aide who led the Russian delegation, said Moscow wanted peace but would fight “however long it takes”.

“We don’t want war, but we’re ready to fight for a year, two, three, however long it takes. We fought Sweden for 21 years. How long are you ready to fight?” he told the Ukrainian delegation.

The Great Northern War, fought between Russia and Sweden, lasted for 21 years, from 1700 to 1721 during the rule of Peter the Great. Putin has previously compared himself to the former Russian emperor.

The talks, mediated by Turkey, last more than 90 minutes. The most significant outcome was an agreement on the largest prisoner of war swap of the conflict so far, with 1,000 captive troops being exchanged.

However, Ukraine criticised Russia for demanding that Kyiv’s forces withdraw from four regions roughly where the front line runs. When the Ukrainian delegation protested the demands to give up four regions, Russian negotiators reportedly replied: “Next time it will be five.”

He won’t yield, unless Ukraine yields.

Zelensky completely screwed over his people, probably on purpose.

>>”Zelensky completely screwed over his people, probably on purpose.”

That goes double for Putin. He’s fine with allowing this war to drag on for another 21 years? Twenty one more years of death for thousands of young Russian men? And for what? What do the Russian people gain from that?

“Next time it will be five.”

Russia is not going to surrender their objectives.

The US is the only entity that could force them, but at horrific cost to mankind.

I figure they’ll keep coming as long as they have cartridges and boots.

The Russian Navy flagship Moskva and its sailors yielded. Prigozhin and his Wagner group yielded, too. Moscow collapsed twice in the last century. Nothing about Putin’s fake and Potemkin Russia is forever.

That may be true, but it has been on Zelensky to do the deal. Zelensky has decided that every Ukrainian life is expendable than rather do the deal. This whole war could have been avoided, I believe, if Zelensky had been willing to do the deal, but he hasn’t.

Putin’s regime just can’t stop warmongering. They don’t call Russia the prison of nations for nothing.

Putin is an old man. It would depend on whether his successor would want to continue the war.

Historical events don’t always translate to the present

Their historical perspective is hysterically tragic

And no they can’t, I give them 1 year and it will be 1991 all over again

Russia might for 21 years, but Russia is already coping with a negative birth rate, added to the grunt drain, similar to Nappolean’s decree of mobilization on the day he abdicated, and went to Elba.

The peoples of both nations might just need to cooperate and finish this business themselves, for their own existence!

21 years - or some other number of years divisible by three or seven.

It can take decades to reestablish the old Russian Empire.

I’m just guessing that someone on the inside will eventually take out the would-be czar.

Yeah, well, getting rid of the last Czar didn’t exactly turn out well.

That’s the thing. The US will eventually force them out in one way or another. And yes, it will be at a horrible cost that will somehow be “justified” by saying it could have been even worse. I take no satisfaction in predicting this but I don’t think I’m wrong, do you?
