$40,000 SALT offer discussed with megabill holdouts

House GOP leaders discussed a new, heightened state-and-local-tax deduction with a group of Republican holdouts as they race to salvage their party-line megabill from ruin.

A $40,000 cap on the key deduction for individuals and $80,000 cap for joint filers was part of a list of items GOP leaders raised overnight as they scrambled to shore up ultraconservative votes, according to three people granted anonymity to describe the private conversations.

The SALT cap increase is one of the biggest hangups in the bill, which is filled with President Donald Trump’s domestic policy priorities. A band of SALT Republicans are publicly pushing for the cap increase to hit $62,000 for individuals and double for joint filers; conservatives generally oppose lifting the existing $10,000 cap, which generally hits high-tax coastal states rich in Democratic votes.

The fact that leadership discussed a specific number with the hard-liners suggests that they see the $40,000/$80,000 cap as a likely final compromise.

As a way to pay for the bump, leaders and holdouts discussed moving up the 2029 start date for Medicaid work requirements, which Republican leaders are working with the White House on. They also talked over the hard-liners’ demands to more quickly scale back Inflation Reduction Act tax credits. But leaders warned that rapidly moving up the tax credit phase-out doesn’t have the votes to pass, according to the people.

Talks are expected to continue through the weekend after the hard-liners tanked a House Budget Committee vote Friday.

Get RID of the D*** income tax!
failing that,
Get RID of the cap on SALT deductions!
and get RID of the tax on pensions and retirement system deferred compensation payouts of all kinds.

these steps will unleash such tremendous prosperity and job growth even PDJT will be amazed!

Even under Trump, the DEMs get much of what they want. Depressing at times.

Who needs a $40,000 state tax deduction so the average guy can’t have a $30,000 standard deduction.

Reading Congessman Norman’s response as to why he voted NO, I kind of get why he voted no..the bill does NOTHING as far as stopping medicaid fraud by allowing able bodied people to continue to get medicaid, and as far as illegals receiving medicaid, they would still get it til 2029 so whats the point

No, get rid of the SALT deductions!

What are you, trying to see the country fail through massive spending beyond revenue?

No, no, no, no. No SALT relief, period. NY, CA. IL, etc. voted to turn shelves into tax hells. We should NOT subsidize them.

Chip Roy talks a big MAGA talk but has been one of the main ones pushing an agenda against Trump’s proposed policies.

These representatives want to have low property tax states subsidize the high property taxes of blue states.

Citizens in individual states are free to tax themselves at any level they want for any projects they want. It’s unfair of them, however, to expect to lessen their Federal tax obligations because they choose to have high State taxes.

If anyhing, deduct their Federal taxes from their own state’s taxes. Just don’t expect other states to pick up the slack.

Really, why should I living in very low tax state subsidize high SALT deductions?

$80,000 in state and local taxes! Even here in CA, a couple paying $80,000 a year in state and local taxes is very wealthy. A couple making $500,000 and living in a $2M house would be below that! We should be getting rid of the SALT deduction completely, not increasing the cap.

How about making all medical expenses fully deductible instead of just a percentage. Didn't they used to be fully deductible?

It’s not a gift to blue states.

It doesn’t help most residents.

It’s a gift to Deep State controlled state legislatures.

I live in NYS.

The SALT deduction has done nothing but enable our masters.

First day of "Accounting 304 - Income Tax", the professor said that we had to memorize three things about taxes, because everything else would be changing all the time and we would have to look it up.

Number 3 - "The Only Fair Tax Is The Tax That Taxes You And Not Me". One of the few things I learned in college so long ago that is still true today.

It’s not just a bicoastal issue. Ill-Annoy needs the relief, too. Prickster is killing us. We need all the help we can get to kick Prickster to the curb. The NRC needs to get serious about backing good candidates here to Make Ill-Annoy Great Again.
