Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) slammed Republicans on Tuesday for proposing major cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps an average of over 42 million Americans purchase food each month.

“Folks who paid taxes and played by the rules, expecting that their government will help them if they fall on hard times and you guys want to tell them to all go screw themselves?” he said at a House Agriculture Committee markup meeting......

Experts warn that the bill could lead to more children facing food insecurity just as research shows that work requirements don’t actually lead to a jump in employment but rather a drop in participants, NBC News reported.

McGovern, after blasting Republicans for lecturing people about “fraud and waste,” stressed that programs like SNAP are in place because most Americans believe “nobody should go without basic necessities.”

Not the taxpayers’ job to pay for others’ basic necessities, except for their own families. (And other people ONLY of they want to.)

Screw SNAP.

Churches used to do this within their congregations. But when people go to kids’ soccer games, go fishing, etc., instead of church they don’t have that community for helping and receiving help.

Your first point nails it. I think it’s safe to say the majority, especially the multigenerational welfare recipients, have never paid a dime of federal income taxes in their entire lifetime(s).

Over 45 years ago, I dated a gal whose parents and herself received welfare payments of one form or another. Twenty odd years ago, I looked her up on the internet out of curiosity.

Not only was she still taxpayer dependent, her son and his family were on the dole also, 3 generations and counting. Not only that, I had just wrote a fat check to the IRS as our duty as a citizen and during the conversation I found out that the son had received almost the exact amount from the treasury, low 5 digits, in the form of Aid To Dependent Children!!!

There has to be a better way.
