Ford hikes prices on Mexico-produced models, citing tariffs

Ford Motor has hiked prices on three of its Mexico-produced models effective May 2, becoming one of the first major automakers to adjust sticker prices following U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Prices on the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, Maverick pickup and Bronco Sport will increase by as much as $2,000 on some models, according to a notice sent to dealers, which was reviewed by Reuters.

Ford earlier this week said Trump's trade war would add about $2.5 billion in costs for 2025, but it expects to reduce that exposure by around $1 billion. Rival General Motors said last week that tariffs were projected to cost it between $4 billion and $5 billion following the imposition of hefty levies on foreign imports of automobiles, but it expected to offset that by at least 30%.

A Ford spokesperson said the price hikes will affect vehicles built after May 2, which would arrive at dealer lots in late June. The spokesperson said the price hikes reflect "usual" mid-year pricing actions, "combined with some tariffs we are facing. We have not passed on the full cost of tariffs to our customers."

Ford shares were down 1.7% at $10.26 at midday. The automaker is still running a discount program through the July 4 weekend on many of its models, the spokesperson said.

Trump's tariffs have unleashed weeks of uncertainty across the auto sector, as major carmakers in the United States and Europe have pulled forecasts, shifted production and caused companies to idle plants.

Following weeks of pushback from the auto industry, Trump softened his tariffs on foreign auto parts imports to give carmakers credits for what is produced in the U.S. and to avoid double-tariffs on raw materials used in auto production.

Trump was elected to reduce inflation, not increase it.

“Trump was elected to reduce inflation, not increase it.”

Agree, I’d rather Trump apply the tariffs to our labor unions, rather than imports.

Ford chose to build former American products in Mexico.

Purchasing foreign goods is a choice - now, with extra tax.

Purchasing US made goods has no extra tax.

A tariff is a voluntary tax, like a lottery ticket.

I’m glad that Trump is leveling the manufacturing playing field by putting in place reciprocal tariffs. If a country has no import tariffs on American vehicles, the U.S. will not place tariffs on imports of their vehicles. We have been taken advantage of for too long and lost too many manufacturing jobs. Particularly to China. I think reciprocity is a good thing. And more manufacturing jobs in the U.S. is a good thing.

“ Ford Motor has hiked prices on three of its Mexico-produced models”

Wow, I’ve only purchased trucks and cars from Ford. Next time I’m at the dealership I’ll ask where they keep the models. I can only look though, I’m married to a red head coming up on 26 years now.

I’ve never seen a manufacturer commit industrial suicide quite like Ford has since 2012. Their $30 Billion electric truck plant in Tennessee is never going to produce a thing. If they can’t build sound product lines, or build a factory, I’m not so sure how they can successfully build vehicles?

Trump is not going to lose support over this. At least not in the short term.

As long as energy and food and everyday items, and jobs are doing well no one is going to be screaming about car prices other than the people who never voted for him in the first place.

If there is anything at the retail level (kitchen table) item that Trump need to worry about it would be gas prices.

Raw material cost is lowest in a long long time but retail prices are up.. that’s something voters that support him won’t turn a blind eye to for long

Fine, nobody buys the e-Mustang, the Maverick is crap, and the Bronco Sport is inferior to the American made Jeep.

They were stupidly reacting. To where government was forcing them.. when government is saying we are effectively banning gas vehicles soon you are left with little choice.

Frankly I would not have invested more than a token amount in e vehicles. They were always destined to be a fad fueled by pick dust and dreams. Reality of their limitations was always going to bring them crashing back to reality sooner or later.

When you can consistently get 300-400 per charge and recharge in 5-10 minutes, then and only then will they mainstream in the marketplace without the use of government force and coercion.

The Maverick prices have been going up since it was first introduced, with the base model starting just under $20,000 in 2022, its first year. So this isn’t anything unusual, but now, they’re blaming the tariffs. Drop the tariffs and I bet the price doesn’t come back down.

And maybe Ford ought to consider building these models in the US instead of Mexico, or at least some of them.

Perhaps Mexico will come to the bargaining table and work this out, just as other countries are doing. It’s about time our government leveled the playing field instead of letting countries consistently put tariffs on OUR goods while we do nothing. Tariffs are a tax on their labor, as opposed to the income tax which is a tax on ours.

Ford parts have been overpriced since WWII. Their average overcharge is 400%.

Just because Ford raises prices doesn’t mean consumers will pay them.

That’s a pricing decision, not inflation. Inflation is a broad-based decline in the purchasing power of the currency, not just a price increase in one product due to tariffs.

And the benches in the automobile industry have run out of Lee Iacocca’s. Today’s industrial titans are charlatans that serve political and social movements instead of industrial success. To them, it’s not about what you make, or how ell you produce it. It’s about how much diversity you can show in your operation. I blame Blackrock and investment bankers for this. They made up a formula that had to be adhered to in order to receive finance. That formula (regulations really) was “prove social DEI goals are met, or you don’t get financing”. So they complied. So now they die.
