A Virginia homeowner allegedly shot and killed a three-sport high school athlete after the teenager and two pals banged on the shooter’s door while playing “ding dong ditch” early Saturday, authorities said.
Tyler Chase Butler, 27, was charged Tuesday with killing 18-year-old high school senior Michael Bosworth Jr. and injuring one of his friends during what police initially reported was an attempted burglary on a residential block in Fredericksburg around 3 a.m., the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said.
Butler claimed to detectives that a trio of teens were trying to break into his house, but the wounded teenager insisted they were only recording a prank that would later be shared on TikTok, according to police documents obtained by local outlets.
The boy, who suffered a graze wound, said the group was looking for a place to hide when a series of gunshots went off, the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star reported.
The third teen, who was not harmed, also reportedly told police they were playing “ding dong ditch” – which involves knocking or ringing a front door and then making a run for it, NBC 4 Washington reported.
Bosworth was a Massaponax High School senior who played lacrosse and football and was also on the wrestling team, his stepfather told NBC 4 Washington.
The victim was gunned down the same day as his high school prom — which was scheduled later that evening.
Butler is facing charges of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, the sheriff’s office said.

It’s a bad idea to shoot someone who hasn’t actually broken into your home.
Another example of Tiktok delivering evil influences to children.
Whose story do you believe?
Is the story of the kids ringing the doorbell at 3:00am as a game?
Do you believe the shooter who was afraid of robbers trying to draw him out to steal or hurt him at 3:00?
How do you get evidence for either? Kids story? Homeowners story? When you don’t know for certain, why do you charge the homeowner?
All the more reason to ban it.

I dont know Va law, but I believe Va castle doctrine says the perp must have entered your home. This may have not been a good shoot. That said, what the hell are kids thinking these days, out at 3AM trying to ‘prank’ people who are asleep?
High school athlete failed last test.
Maybe this lesson will cause others to wise up.
Depends on where you live.
Given the ethnicity of the homeowner, this verdict will be difficult to predict. If the dead student was white, his chances are pretty good. If not, race grievance penalties offset and he likely gets a guilty verdict.
Maybe he was just following Joe Biden’s sage advice to just shoot through the door.
Fact pattern suggests this was not a legal use of deadly force. Low IQ and poor impulse control contribute to tragedy. And yes, the kids were felony stupid.

Long before the advent of the internet, there was a prank involving a paper bag, dog excrement, a match, and ringing the doorbell.
At 3am they’re not playing a game. They’re willfully trespassing and harassing. It’s dark out. They got shot. Homeowner is innocent.
Any trespassing after dark should be viewed as a burglary or homicide attempt.
Could be both versions are correct. Ring doorbell, say something stupid, run away and wait and see if anyone is home. If no one appears to be home then rob? Dunno. Need more information.
The same state where a lumpy lard ass loon tried playing an in your face prank on a door dash guy.
The guy told the stupid kid to stop, yet the punk kept it up, untill the door dash guy pulled a piece and plugged him in the belly.
Door dash dude got off.
The remarkable thing is..the punk failed at the lesson and intended to keep it up.
This happened in some mall in VA.
