News 12 has obtained exclusive video showing the moments before a lost DoorDash driver was allegedly shot by an elected official in Orange County.
The 24-year-old victim is seen on surveillance camera at a residence in Chester holding a plastic bag and his cellphone at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, while state police say he attempted to find the correct delivery address.
“I have DoorDash. My phone is broken. I need some help,” the unidentified DoorDash employee is heard saying during the recording.
News 12 traced the dasher’s steps to one of the houses he tried in the Valerie Drive neighborhood before authorities say he was gunned down. “He did stop at our house,” said one homeowner. “I thought maybe my wife ordered DoorDash. He didn’t seem to speak good English." State police say the victim eventually ended up at a residence nearby on Valerie Drive and was shot by the person who answered the door - Chester Town Highway Superintendent John Reilly III.
Authorities say Reilly, 48, asked the victim to leave his property before he fired at least three rounds from a .45 caliber handgun, striking the victim once in the back as the victim tried to leave and was inside his car. The victim’s family tells News 12 that his phone went dead during the ordeal and that he stopped at Cumberland Farms in Chester to charge it to 1% in order to call them for help after the shooting. State police say a store clerk called 911 but that the dasher left and drove home to Middletown, where he was eventually met by EMS and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Reilly was arrested on Saturday and is facing charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm. Authorities say he is a federally licensed firearms dealer and that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are involved in the ongoing investigation. Chester Supervisor Brandon Holdridge issued a statement saying town officials are deeply troubled by the allegations. “We hope the person who was injured in the incident makes a full recovery,” Holdridge said. “The Town of Chester is not taking any position on any investigation or legal proceeding. Mr. Reilly is presumed innocent until proven guilty. As an elected official, the Town Board does not have control over Mr. Reilly’s future as Highway Superintendent.” State police say they’re looking into whether the shooting was a hate crime and that the evidence shows the dasher was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“There’s nothing to indicate that the victim had any nefarious intentions. He was just out there doing his job, trying to make a food delivery,” says New York State Police Capt. Joseph Kolek. The victim’s family says he came to New York six months ago from West Africa and worked for DoorDash about a month. They say he speaks French and was studying English at SUNY Orange in Middletown. “No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood,” says a DoorDash spokesperson. “We’re devastated by this senseless act of violence.”
State police say the victim suffered serious, life-altering injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition. Reilly was arraigned and is being held in Orange County Jail on $250,000 cash bail. News 12 reached out to his attorney for comment but didn't receive a response.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
“We’re devastated by this senseless act of violence.”
What do they think about sensible acts of violence?
Wait. He was shot three times a .45, and was able to drive to a store, and still had to charge his phone to call for help? And then still drive away again?
Some elected government officials are above the law. We will have to wait and see.
He must have had more food to deliver before he went to the hospital.
Did the people who ordered the food ever get their food delivered?
The "my phone is out of juice" is a red flag, an old and well-known scam to gain entry to a home. Good time to call 9-1-1, rather than try to gun down someone who is btw going to have a fishbowl put in his hospital room to hold all the biz cards of ambulance chasers.
“as the victim tried to leave and was inside his car.
Kinda not really the time to shoot somebody in self-defense in NYS.
In a tertiary way, companies like Door Dash share part of the blame, when one of their hires gets shot in this manner.
The company is partly at fault for hiring people who cannot or only barely speak English.
Such people are inadvertently being ‘set up’ to fail, sometimes in a very dangerous way.
For many people, brand new to this country, Door Dash provides an opportunity to earn some quick cash. They mostly need to learn how to drive while at same time glancing at their GPS, something that was illegal not long ago. But many of these drivers are still learned the very basics of our language. Or when they do speak English, it is so heavily accented, most Americans could never understand what the driver is saying.
New immigrants, or anyone who likes a lot of driving will find these jobs easy to get, but usually very low paying.
But sometimes, there is a Perfect Storm of events and appearances, that will make a Homeowner feel in danger.
You know the old saying: “Better to be judged by 12, vs being carried by 6!”
It seems to be dangerous work with a lot of them getting shot or shot at.

It takes a real dangerous psycho nut to start shooting to kill people for having an accent or ringing their doorbell, or pulling into their driveway.
A Nut, or somebody now paranoid, because of past negative experiences.
Yes, that caught my eye, too. If the news story is correct and he really did shoot the poor hapless guy — in the back! — after he had already got in his car and was trying to leave, then he’s worse than trigger happy.
“””In a tertiary way, companies like Door Dash share part of the blame, when one of their hires gets shot in this manner.

Another thing that people should be concerned about Door Dash employees is that folks on probation or parole are regularly employed by Door Dash.
If shooter is a Demonrat, he will be exonerated. If not, shooter will be imprisoned.
LOL, paranoid nuts shooting and killing people on their porches and in their driveways for no reason are just psycho nuts, paranoids as you say, there is no justification for it.
... and did they give him a 30% tip?
Kinda not really the time to shoot somebody in self-defense in NYS.

He might jam it into Reverse, and get you!
“...The victim’s family says he came to New York six months ago from West Africa and worked for DoorDash about a month. They say he speaks French...”
Looks like a hate crime to me. Since the shooter is white and the victim is black, this will be all over the news. If it were the reverse, no one would care.
