Newsom Panics over Trump Hollywood Tariff; Asks for Tax Credits Instead
Breitbart ^ | 05/06/2025 | Joel B. Pollak

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) reacted Monday evening to President Donald Trump’s proposed 100% tariff on movies made outside the U.S. by asking for a $7.5 billion tax credit for the industry instead.

Trump made the tariff proposal Sunday as a way of shifting Hollywood production back to the U.S., after decades in which the industry sought to cut costs by filming in Canada or even as far away as South Africa.

The president’s proposal drew applause from unions that represent “below the line” workers in the film industry, such as the Teamsters, which praised the president for taking American workers seriously.

But the Hollywood studios — whose executives are among the most lavish donors to the Democratic Party — were alarmed, and Newsom, normally combative towards the president, pleaded for tax incentives instead.

Big Money people want to make more Big Money.

Tax credits are a bad idea, always.

Trump should seek to bar tax credits to the video industry on an international basis.

We shouldn’t subsidize the projects of multi-million dollars per picture actors.

I’m leery of applying tariffs to intellectual property stuff.

I think a money export tax of 10% is probably necessary. This would be applied to remittances, trips out of the country, imports not bartered for exports, etc.

A position that values “Main Street” over “Wall Street.”

Rank and file union support, suits oppose.

Another shiv in Newsom’s presidential hopes. Wonder if he even tries to run in 2028?

Because Newsome represents rich studio executives, not California workers.

Much cheaper to use Indian workers, Chinese, South American

Old news, the white house already backed off, today made statement, said Trump was just thinking about doing it.

Doh

Not happening.

Drop all tax credits period. Go to flat tax or ad valorem. No deductions, no credits. Your tax form is an index card with a number showing with holding for the year and your confirmation signature.

Brilliant move by Trump, he is undermining the Union leadership by actually protecting American Jobs.

I grew up in a Union household and saw them for what they are, another corrupted cog in the the Leftist political machine, but Trump's outreach to the rank and file members accelerates his transformation of the Republican party into America's party

Eliminating the equally abused H1-B and Student Visa programs would complete the makeover.

On USA Today headline,

“White House walks back Trump’s big Hollywood tariff announcement”

That’s a USA Today headline, which is almost meaningless. Even the article itself contradicts its own headline. From the article:

“A White House statement on May 5 said that “no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made” after Trump’s declaration made waves in the entertainment industry.”

That doesn’t sound like “Not happening” to me. In combination with other recent statements he’s made on the issue, it sounds more like he’s considering various options but has not taken tariffs off the table.

Teamsters’ press release last night sounded very supportive.

Wonder if the leadership really means it, or if was just to sucker the rank and file...

Tax credits, LOLOLOLOLOL!

Why not tv shows, too? Imagine having to pay for shows from Canada. Megan Markel will be most unhappy.

It was Newscums tax credit scam that let Hollywood companies move filming out of the area. Millions of $$$.

No. Do films in the US, using US citizens or pound sand.
