Victor Davis Hanson: The Trump-Iran Deal, Explained
The Daily Signal YT Channel ^ | May 5 2025 | victor davis hanson

President Donald Trump is right to believe that Iran is in a historically vulnerable position right now.

The Assad regime is kaput. Hezbollah’s effectiveness has been dramatically reduced since Oct. 7. Hama is living underground among the rubble of Gaza.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

However, even with a maximum pressure campaign, oil embargoes, domestic instability, two things will never change:

You can’t trust a word that comes out of the Iranian regime’s mouth, and their legitimacy hinges on acquiring nuclear weapons, argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words:”

“The pressure is all on Iran. Militarily. Diplomatically. Economically. Socially. Culturally. What do I mean by that? Culturally, there is about 30% to 40% of the country are non-Farsi Persian speakers. And they're very restive, angry. Power outages. The regime is unpopular. It's diverted billions of dollars to these terrorist appendages that now didn't pay off, that they're defunct.

“And so, Donald Trump thinks that he, with this maximum pressure, putting this crushing oil embargo—which by the way, Joe Biden lifted—that he can bring them to negotiations one last time.

“Personally, I don't think he can. Nothing that that regime has ever said is accurate. Nobody in the MAGA movement wants an optional war in the Middle East. But they will have nuclear weapons, perhaps in a year. So, what is the likely scenario?”

So, what is the likely scenario?”

The answer is in Ezekiel 38. Its reference to Rosh is Russia; its reference to Persia is Iran.

“So, what is the likely scenario?””

I think, optimally, the best outcome would would be for Iran to tick off Pakistan and let them nuke each other

That sums it up nicely.

Iran’s hardline Islamist regime will never abandon its nuclear ambitions.

The regime views itself as the vanguard of Islamic revolution, with clerical leaders seeing their nuclear goals as an apocalyptic duty.

Deterrence assumes rational actors—but Iran’s leadership embraces martyrdom over survival.

Bottom line:

Given that peaceful efforts will fail, military options—while dangerous—are the only way to prevent a permanent nuclear threat. The world—not just the U.S. and Israel—must act and act soon.

Trump is putting a crushing oil embargo on Iran—which by the way, Joe Biden lifted—to bring Iran to negotiations. Nobody wants another war in the MidEast....except Israel...they’ve long-planned a war financed by the US. This ensures that the US incurs Iran’s wrath.

OTOH, Netanyahu has discredited himself on numerous occasions.
<><>He was the first to congratulate Biden’s 2020 “win.”
<><>China is Israel’s 2nd largest trading partner; total trade value reaching a whopping $24.45B.
<><>in 2017, Netanyahu urged China “to assume its rightful place… on the world stage.
<><>”Israel is your perfect junior partner,” he added. “I believe this is a marriage made in heaven.”
<><>Biden showed Israel owed the US $24B via 600 active Foreign Military Financing weaponry tabs.
<><>Israel enriches itself; the only recipient permitted to use US aid to buy from its own defense firms.
<><>US tax dollars reportedly account for some 15 percent of Israel’s defense budget.
<><>Israel also buys US military products outside of the US Foreign Military Financing program.
<><>Trump putting “America First” does not sit well in identity-obsessed Israel.

To all the anti-semite hunters out there, this is for you. Enjoy.

Maybe you should read Ezekiel 38.

Can you describe just how Israel is now living in safety?

Ezekiel 38:8 — “In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.”

Do you know how many countries a Russian invading force has to go through?

And why would Russia ever want to invade tiny Israel when modern countries have ballistic missiles?

Russia is having problems with Ukraine and it is next door.

The Ruskies, CCP and Norks all have had nuclear weapons—and we’re still here.

If Iran finally has them (but what’s with their being within “weeks” of having them for decades now anyway?), maybe Israel will calm down a bit in their provocations.

Yes...If Israel would just calm it’s provocations, the ME would be a vast sea
of tranquility, just as it was prior to 10/7. It’s always the “stab in the back” of the Jews that is the problem.

I actually see Israel as something of England’s cat’s paw in all of this; but yes, they seem to be constantly trying to pull us into war with Iran, as Europe now is constantly trying to pull us into war with Russia.

We need out of NATO and the UN as a start in resisting more loss of American lives, treasure and sovereignty.

Yes! Israel is always to blame when she successfully defends herself!
Again....it’s not the mullahs or their proxies, but Israel a
and the Jews!

The mullahs will certainly adhere to the concept of MAD even after their 12th mahdi pops his head up out of that well!

The ideal would be for Iran to tick off another Muslim country so bad that they would go to war against Iran. Muslin versus Muslim. Possible????

I think that PT wants to give the Persians the opportunity to over-throw the weakened theocracy and take their own country back.

Tiny Israel, a sliver of land in the vast Mideast, is a staggering
supplier to the world. In 2023, the top exports from Israel were:
<><>Integrated Circuits ($9.99 Billion),
<><>Diamonds ($9.13 Billion),
<><>Broadcasting Equipment ($3.34 Billion),
<><>Medical Instruments ($2.56 Billion),
<><>Refined Petroleum ($2.47 Billion).
<><>and more.

The United States imports a variety of goods from Israel; top categories include:
<><>electrical and electronic equipment,
<><>pearls, precious stones,
<><>metals, and coins,
<><>optical and photographic equipment,
<><>technical, and medical apparatus
<><>pharmaceutical products,
<><>and packaged substances used as meds, drugs, or remedies.

Israel’s top export destinations were
<><>China $24.5 billion,
<><>United States ($20.3B),
<><>Ireland ($4.22B),
<><>Germany ($2.75B),
<><>Hong Kong ($2.46B).

In 2017, Netanyahu urged China “to assume its rightful place on the world stage. ”Israel is your perfect junior partner,” he added. “I believe this is a marriage made in heaven.”

Biden confirmed Israel owed the US $24 Billion via 600 active Foreign Military Financing weaponry tabs. Israel enriches itself w/ US military tax dollars; the only recipient permitted to use US aid to buy from its own thriving defense firms.

US tax dollars to Israel reportedly total $4 billion per year. But Israel is close-mouthed as to where these tax dollars are spent; the US State Dept is complicit in the secrecy.

Israel offers its citizens many free or govt subsidized social services, including
<><>universal health insurance,
<><>old-age pensions,
<><>support for individuals with disabilities
<><>and various services for single parents, and immigrants.

Yes...money well spent.
Simply put, do you not realize that without USA, Israel does not exist?
Much of this planet does NOT want Israel to exist.
You have conveniently left out what Israel, in turn, does for US.
Instead of patronage & war materiel...would you prefer American boots on the
ground? Have you not seen that Israel has all but defeated all of Iran’s proxies so that we do not have to.
Your list is impressive, yet that is exactly what a super-power should and must do for one its most (if it the most) important allies.
It is in our vital interest to do everything that we possibly can to make sure Israel thrives.
