Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!

Funny how he randomly capitalizes words like Movies and Land.
Whatever one thinks about this, this is one tariff where the typical criticism of “It’s going to raise the price for American consumers” doesn’t really apply. The left is going to have a hard time coming out against this. Just in terms of the politics, it’s brilliant and a way for Trump to further divide the Democrats.
There should also be tariffs on tuition.
How does this work? There is no revenue when the movie is brought in. So the movie theater charges $10 a ticket. They add $10, a $20 show?
True. But it has nothing to do with movies being made overseas and everything to with with the fact that 99% of movies today suck.
Would tariffs have saved Snow Off-White from foreign films on opening weekend?
So is Trump really calling for movies to be made in the USA because foreign films are a National Security threat?
Somebody need to counsel The Don. He is talking gibberish.
Netflix is toast.
Studios will bitch...Unions will support.

It will increase prices for consumers. He is not targeting French films or Chinese films, he is targeting Hollywood films that are shot in Canada or Europe, and have their CG done by companies in Korea and China. If a $100 million dollar Hollywood movie costs $200 million after tariffs, ticket prices will have to go up too. Netflix subscription will have to go up.
True, but that’s a separate issue. Trump’s referring to the movie making industry (i.e. the sound stages, editing facilities, etc.). This tariff is not designed to help mega-rich movies stars, directors, studio execs, etc. It’s designed to help the thousands of middle class jobs being sent overseas so that the Hollywood bigwigs can save a few bucks. These are technical job in set design, camera operation, etc.
Let our movie industry die...they are just producing woke junk. Why help that?
Reacher season 1 - set in rural Georgia, made in Canada.
As someone whose read all the books, I wonder why books set in America , written by American authors are made in Canada, or London. I thought NY was the great artistic capitol of America. And why is Marvel making movies in Australia or London. And are all American actors just crap now? rhetorical, I’m sure it’s only 90%. A little nationalism is a good thing for our country. I have grand daughters that I want to have a future that involves a home and grandchildren for them. Not some gun grabbing Aussie, Canadian, or Londoner who will heed the call of the mosque on Friday afternoon.
How does this play out with streaming content. I go to a Korean website, use PayPal or BitCoin or whatever to purchase a stream of a Korean movie. If I am using a VPN, the content gets transferred to me without even entering the country. A lot of movies are paid for though membership fees, where you can pick your own movies. Again, how do you deal with that paradigm if the content is not imported into the U.S. in the traditional manner?
>>”If a $100 million dollar Hollywood movie costs $200 million after tariffs, ticket prices will have to go up too.”
A $100 million dollar Hollywood movie won’t cost $200 million after tariffs. It will just have to be made here and the cost might go up maybe $10 million, if that. And if that causes an increase in ticket prices to consumers, the leftist movie stars who make $20 million a film might want to consider making a little less in order to help pay the salaries of American technicians rather than foreigners. After all, isn’t greed something they love to complain about?
Sorry forgot Lee Childs is British, my bad.
