Newark airport air traffic controller offers damning assessment: ‘It is not safe. Don’t fly into Newark’

Newark Liberty International Airport is “not safe” for travelers, one air traffic controller at the has reportedly warned.

“It is not safe. It is not a safe situation right now for the flying public,” the federal air safety employee reportedly told NBC News correspondent Tom Costello.

“Really an incredible statement, unsolicited. He just said that to me, and separately, ‘Don’t fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs,’” Costello recounted on MSNBC.

The airport, which saw 24.3 million passengers and is the second busiest in the New York City area, has been drowning in delays and cancellations for days.

Federal Aviation Administration has blamed a shortage of air traffic controllers at the airport, along with runway construction.

Newark has lost 20% of its staff in recent weeks, according to MSNBC.

The situation has grown so dire that United Airlines — which uses the airport as its primary East Coast hub — announced it was cancelling 35 roundtrip flights daily, saying the it was necessary “in order to protect our customers.”

Delays continued on Sunday, with inbound flights waiting more than two hours before being allowed to land, according to Flight Aware’s Misery Map.

"Newark has lost 20% of its staff in recent weeks"

Wow. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the FAA rejecting 1,000 highly qualified candidates in favor DEI poorly qualified hires.

"The crux of the lawsuit [against the FAA] is that the FAA, under the Obama administration, dropped a skill-based system for hiring controllers and replaced it with a “biographical assessment” in an alleged bid to boost the number of minority job applicants."

JFK has more flights than EWR, but is difficult to access.

I just tried to book a flight from Dulles (Washington DC) to (I knew not to go to Newark) the Hudson River and they hung up on me! Hey, if Sully can do it, why not make it a new route?

Yet another example of why we are going to See The USA In Our Chevrolet!

It takes 3-5 minutes to ‘charge’ our SUV, and the big gas tank provides lots of range. With brand new tires, our SUV just floats along the highways and byways of America.

In terms of passenger traffic, it is one of the busiest airports in the U.S., ranking 20th with 24.5 million passengers in 2023.

Despite its size and traffic, a study published in September 2023 ranked Newark as the worst among major U.S. airports based on traveler satisfaction, with a score of 732 out of 1,000, well below the average score of 772.

From the article: The Federal Aviation Administration has blamed a shortage of air traffic controllers at the airport, along with runway construction... Newark has lost 20% of its staff in recent weeks, according to MSNBC.

Yeah, blame construction, not the fact the 20% of their staff has departed in recent weeks.

Federal agencies have long been a clown-world joke. Now they just don't bother pretending they're not.
