The state requires voters to prove their citizenship. An error led to chaos, suspicion and confusion, signaling broader challenges for Republican-led efforts across the country.
PHOENIX — For 30 years, no one questioned Danny Dobosz’s citizenship when the lifelong Republican cast his ballot.
So when a letter arrived from a local election official last month asking him to send back a copy of his birth certificate to prove he was an American citizen who was eligible to vote, he tossed it in the trash at his home in Yuma, Arizona. Dobosz, an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump who was born in New Mexico, said he had “no real ambition” to verify his legal status to anyone — even if his ability to vote is jeopardized.
“It’s their duty to prove I’m not,” said the 48-year-old owner of a water-softening business.
“I know I’m a citizen. I pay my taxes,” he said. “Obviously we’re citizens — it’s on their end to fix it, not our end.”
If Dobosz and about 200,000 other Arizona voters don’t provide citizenship documentation, they will not get to vote in next year’s race for governor. State officials last year discovered they had failed to keep records confirming whether about 4 percent of the state’s 4.4 million registered voters were citizens, and they’ve been hustling to fix the problem ever since. They have set off on a scramble that has prompted incredulity, hostility and suspicion from longtime voters like Dobosz who are now learning they are among those caught in the state-caused voter registration blunder.
The problems in Arizona played out as Trump and Republicans pushed for requiring voters to prove their citizenship as they claimed without proof that large numbers of noncitizens were illegally casting ballots. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal...

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Hmmm.
So they found a Trump supporter who was against the measure.
Another lie by the Compost.
Arizona bungled nothing.
It was black robed thugs as usual overturning the will of the voters.

Democrats have bungled quite a few things without being identified for having done so by the Washington Pest.
Compost is full of lies. Awful rag
When I moved to Texas and got a TX driver license, I had to provide my current US passport for the REAL ID requirement. If everyone needs a REAL ID requiring proof of US citizenship or legal residence to fly as of next month, everyone should be able to prove US citizenship to cast a vote.
This guy has a strange attitude.
He says it’s up to someone to prove that he is not an American citizen. He said it is not up to him to provide evidence that he is an American citizen.
With that reasoning, we can never know for sure anyone’s status. How does he expect someone to prove that he is not an American citizen?
With his reasoning we would never be able to deport anyone, among other issues.
Danny Dobosz is a real asshole.
“ This guy has a strange attitude.”
That’s putting it very mildly. He’s an obstreperous jerk. How does WaPo find these people?
If the government wrote to any FReeper saying “we lost your records, can you provide copies of your birth certificate,” we’d grumble and just do it.
This was done with Real ID of Driver License where as a BC was required to get the star on a license and embedded in the magnetic strip.
The Driver License (or Texas Real ID) was required to vote.
If one’s scanned DL or ID was not Real ID, you did not get to vote.
Even retired US Speaker of House Jim Wright was turned away from a Ft Worth polling station…”Do you know who I am?”
WAIT UNTIL HE HAS TO FILE FOR SOC SEC....
That name is a blast from the past. Retired in disgrace if I remember correctly.
Dems are never disgraced. They just retire. They did their job.
I have no problem verifying I am a US citizen in order to cast my vote, run for office, serve in a government position.
The majority of Americans, all races, sexes, ages, want voters to prove citizenship. A large majority.
good luck with Real ID driver’s license. Where is your license. I think he is foreign born, and the act is about to be exposed.
That is Danny Dobozo to you. 🧐
That is the entire purpose of the media in finding and distributing this story. It is setting the boundaries of the narrative to force a desired conclusion.
It is propaganda.
The Democrats and their sponsors do not want non-citizens deported or prevented from voting. They know they will get 99.9% of such people to vote Democrat. Or at least the names can be used to cast votes for the Democrats.
As an Arizona voter what I get are thick booklets filled with vote information. I usually look up what the League Of Women Voters advocates then vote the opposite.
“I know I’m a citizen. I pay my taxes,” he said. “Obviously we’re citizens — it’s on their end to fix it, not our end.”
Going against the general consensus
here, folks. I 100% agree with this
guys’ statement.
The Dem states started issuing
drivers licenses to illegal alien
invaders knowing full well that a
complete mess would ensue.
The feds should have stepped in
when the Dem states started doling
out the licenses. Hind sight is
20/20.
Why should I, an American citizen
of 70 years, who’s voted in every
Federal election since 1973, be
required to prove all over again,
that I’m an American citizen?
The ID I currently hold does not
have the coveted red star, but yet,
afforded me with a DOD secret
clearance, which accompanied a 46
year career.
I’m tired of hoop jumpin’.
I called our county clerks office
with a few questions.
Turns out, if you haven’t moved
and are registered to vote
(you’re in the system) in that
county with your past history of
voting records, you don’t need that
little red star on your license.
Your property tax records are tied
to your voter ID, and also makes one
selectable for jury duty.
I’m an avid Trump supporter also.
But this Real ID is Real BS.
