Losers Gotta Lose [on the Canadian elections]
Steyn Online ^ | 4-29-2025 | Mark Steyn

So in the end two-and-a-half years of Pierre Poilievre micro-gatekeeping the Tory party so as not to frighten the horses counted for less in Canadian politics than two-and-a-half hours of Tony Blair having dinner at Lady Rogers' agreeable Michelin-starred River Café in West London. Not a bad Dover sole, should Sir Tony ever invite you to join him so he can pitch you a stint as prime minister of New Zealand or the Netherlands.

As to M Poilievre's micro-gatekeeping, here is a fine example of that from close to home: Two years ago the alleged "conservative" leader called the views of a Mark Steyn Show guest "vile" and forced three of his backbenchers to apologise for lunching with her. Yes, I know there's a lot of lunching and dining in this column and, if you're stuck in the drive-thru lane at Wendy's, it might already be getting to you. But that's the point: the globalists handle even the restaurant bookings better than the faux-conservatives do.

Poilievre's target that day was Christine Anderson, whom he called "racist" and "hateful". As it happens, Frau Anderson is an elected representative of the people - unlike Pierre, at the time of writing - and her party, the AfD, is currently leading in the German polls - also unlike Pierre. I rose gallantly to defend my guest's honour and, disinclined to forego the low-hanging fruit, mocked the Tory leader as "Pierre Pussievre". Then he munched an apple (more dining, albeit lower budget than Blair) and became an Internet sensation. After that he sat on his Granny Smith and was content to leave it to Justin's Pride Parade socks as they began their remorseless descent down his ankles.

Tony Blair had a better idea...

As a native Canuck, Steyn was apparently far more ambivalent about the "conservative" than most here were...and for good reason, it seems.

Let's just say, I am in no hurry to visit Canada.

Canada’s conservatives want to conserve leftist victories.

Canada’s leftists want to march on to new ones.

They just voted for LOTS of economic hurt via tariffs and stupid liberal spending policies. Not to mention more censorship and authorities lockdowns. “Elbows up” their own asses.

Re-posted from an earlier thread ...

Something that doesn’t get much attention in this election is that there is really no upside to a Trump administration with a "conservative" government in Canada.

The U.S. dollar, for example, is about 40% stronger against the Canadian dollar today than it was during the peak of the "conservative" administration of Stephen Harper. Having done business on both sides of the border, I can tell you that the heyday of my Canadian operation was during the Harper administration while my U.S. work was facing major challenges.

Does anyone ever watch Viva Frei on YouTube? A former Canadian lawyer, he’s since moved to FLA, but he was not impressed with Pierre’s conservatism.

Exactly. Conservatives lose because they do not actually stand for anything, or offer Canada a positive vision. Straw polls had Trump leading in Canada (and it’s been that way for about 10 years). You’d think the tories would take note.

Trump needs to jack up Carney’s butt and tell he to stop the illegal alien invasion of America from Canada. All of the Indians and Pakis are coming in through Canada.

This election was largely a result of Trump.

Not to mention that Canada’s elections are probably rigged anyway.

Canadians just voted for a safe base for American seditionists to foment color revolution in our country.

Canada may well become a refuge, or worse, for the NGO crowd seething with wounded pride. As Cambodia was for the Viet Cong, so too will Carney’s Canada become for Antifa and BLM.

I hope we are prepared for a serious counteroffensive if one is required. And by serious, I mean admission for Alberta, and occupation of the Maritimes.

We can live with a Canada that disapproves of us. We should not live with one that supports sedition and revolution in the USA.

it’s all climate change now

you would think canada who resides north of a PNP diode with no hope of receiving southern US sunshine would welcome warming?

no. they are that dumb. they voted for a hoax, a gaslighter

canada. look, I was willing to look past the putine fries in McDonalds and the weird beer conveyors, but you are beyond repair with this election.

What you need is our constitution.

Just close the border, ehh?

On a good day, a Canadian conservative is like an old school liberal Democrat in the US, NOT even a blue dog union type. Still too neo-European, and hide your guns, please.

“Steyn was apparently far more ambivalent about the “conservative” than most here were.”

What is ambivalent about “Pierre Pussievre”?

I love DJT almost to an immoral degree. But I must say that his "51st state" stuff was foolish...particularly knowing that there was an election coming up. Also,he should have delayed his tariffs on Canada for the same reason. I'm not saying he should have skipped them...just delayed them until after their election.

The Maoists won because of Trump. There's no getting around it.
