US Airman on the run after alleged child sex abuse material possession and distribution

The US Air Force is urgently searching for a Florida-based airman accused of possessing and distributing disturbing child sexual abuse materials.

Airman First Class Branden Cecil Standifer, 27, was due in court on April 18 for a hearing related to the charges but failed to appear, prompting officials to believe he is evading prosecution, according to KTTC. Standifer is wanted for military desertion, as he is believed to have gone into hiding to avoid facing the charges.

According to a warning from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), Standifer fled Hulburt Field in Florida and was last seen on surveillance footage at Bozeman Yellowstone Airport in Montana, just one day after disappearing. He was wearing sunglasses and carrying a hiking backpack.

Recent cellphone data places Standifer in the area of Grove Heights, Minnesota, though it’s uncertain if he is still there, according to Daily Mail. The AFOSI has also stated that Standifer has ties to Michigan and Ohio, expanding the search area. The Air Force has called on anyone with information to immediately contact 911.

He either enlisted at an older age, or was possibly an E-4 and lost a stripe. Air Force basically gives you E-4 at 36 months. They also have an up or out policy, so you couldn’t sit as a Senior Airman (E-4) for years on end, you either have to make Staff by a certain number of years in or be shown the front gate.

Up through Senior Airman (E-4) is pretty much automatic based on time and not screwing up. Doesn’t rely on having positions open to move up. That only impacts Staff Sergeant (E-5) and above. Thirty-plus years ago, it was mathematically impossible for me to make E-5 the first two times I sat for the test. Not enough open positions and too many of us testing for them. The third time I screwed up on my own and didn’t make it (no one to blame but myself). By the time it rolled around again, I’d already made the decision to not re-enlist, so I purposely didn’t test so as not to take a slot from someone else who was staying in.

Just to put things into perspective, in 1976 my Staff Sergeant supervisor (with a Top Secret security clearance) was arrested in the barracks for trafficking pornography and other contraband.   He was a real sad sack and one of the last draftees in the all volunteer Air Force.

In 1975, I enlisted for the full six years, got A1C half way through Basic and sewed on Staff Sergeant in three years and nine months.   The two-winger pinger deal was the way to go.
