MEXICO CITY — At the entrance to Mexico City’s largest park lies a towering marble monument to six young military cadets killed in battle.
The Niños Héroes — “boy heroes” — died while defending Mexico’s capital during the Mexican-American War, which broke out 179 years ago this week.
That conflict may not loom large in the minds of most Americans. But in Mexico, which in defeat was forced to cede more than half of its territory to the U.S., memories of the war and other military quarrels with the nation’s powerful northern neighbor remain deeply felt.
As Mexicans, we have to unite for this new battle — which is a trade war
— Felix de la Rosa, chemical engineer
Today, Mexico is once again locked in battle with the United States, this time facing an American president who is hurling insults, tariffs and threatening U.S. drone strikes here. Many see it as just the latest chapter in an age-old tale of U.S. aggression.
“In Mexico there’s a perception that the United States is the villain of our story,” said historian Alejandro Rosas. “That’s the narrative you grow up with, it’s what they teach you in school. We’ve been victims of the United States forever.”
The Niños Héroes are often viewed as the embodiment of courage, teenagers who fought like men against a northern invader. Their faces have appeared on currency,...

And yet they still would rather live in the US than Mexico.
They suffer under what most Spanish colonies suffer from.
An over inflated idea of their self worth and inability to accept the consequences of their own choices.
Cool
Don’t come here
I’ve been saying this for years. Mexico is not our friend. They are America’s nearest enemy. Mexico’s goal has always been to destroy America.
“Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States” —Porfirio Diaz.
Exactly.
Good embrace the suck that is Mexico and stop coming to the US. Also call back your invaders cause we suck and they shouldn’t be here to suffer...
And I’ll bet Mexicans don’t even care we celebrate Cinco de Mayo here!
The death cult country...
Is Mexico ready to try another Thorton Affair?
Good; maybe they will boycott coming to the US.
Mexico is a disappointing country. The have all the natural resources, great land, beach fronts...yet they still get by like a third world country. We enforce our border laws and now we’re the villain. If we gave Arizona and New Mexico to Mexico, we would have to build a wall bordering the northern part of those states. Why? Mexicans don’t even like Mexico.
As far as I know their education system has always taught that America is evil and the cause of Mexico’s problems.
i remember the mexican-American war
they started it
we finished it
“Mexico lost half its territory, including California, in the war that broke out this week in 1846.”
To me the U.S.-Mexico war was the opening salvo in the Spanish American war, even though Mexico had won formal independence from Spain in 1812. Mexico continued to reflect its Spanish heritage in law, education, and politics.
We need more Mexican territory to put all of the Mexican illegal aliens that have invaded America. Mexicans voted with their feet so maybe we should vote with our guns.
sounds like mexico is going to kick out all of the US citizens
rounding around waving American flags
Great. We will send back your Mexico lovers who overstayed their welcome, ASAP.
The California territory (which included other states formerly part of Mexico), were bought and paid for by the USA, which also forgave the war debts of Mexico. What other nation that won a war would do that? We conquered Mexico fairly, after Mexicans invaded American towns and killed Americans by crossing the border (similar to what they're doing now).
Our army took a look around the capital, Mexico City, and said nope, you keep your stinking country. The California territory was a Spanish creation that was largely populated by USA citizens, and a deal was struck to buy it because Mexico was broken (and broken).
