A federal judge in California on Thursday barred the Trump administration from denying or conditioning the use of federal funds to “sanctuary” jurisdictions, saying that portions of President Donald Trump's executive orders were unconstitutional.
But Orrick, who was nominated by President Barack Obama, said this was essentially what government lawyers argued during Trump’s first term when the Republican issued a similar order.
“Their well-founded fear of enforcement is even stronger than it was in 2017,” Orrick wrote, citing the executive orders as well as directives from Bondi, other federal agencies and Justice Department lawsuits filed against Chicago and New York.
San Francisco successfully challenged the 2017 Trump order and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the lower court that the president exceeded his authority when he signed an executive order threatening to cut funding for “sanctuary cities.”
Plaintiffs were pleased with the judge's order.
“At a time when we continue to see tremendous federal overreach, the Court’s ruling affirms that local governments can serve their mission and maintain trust with the communities they care for," said Tony LoPresti, counsel for Santa Clara County, in a statement.
It's unclear if federal agencies will abide by the order. On Thursday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a reminder to recipients of federal transportation funding that they are expected to follow federal law, including on immigration enforcement, or face potential consequences.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
This judicial coup is becoming absurd.
Sanctuary cities and states are blatantly illegal. This judge is using his bench to order the Federal Government to aid criminality. Is this RICO yet? Sure smells like a conspiracy to commit crimes.
At some point Trump is going to be forced to suspend habeus corpus or just roll over.
Could WWI or WWII have been fought in courts?
We are delaying the outcome of one side (Left) cheating and laughing at us for trying to preserve a free constitutional republic. They and their judges think we are weaklings and saps to be ridiculed and stepped on.
Most of these injunctions I’m “meh” on, but this is beyond the pale.
Come on. Any government entity declaring “sanctuary” is FLOUTING FEDERAL LAW.
I’ve always said the president (and just about any federal or local LE arm) should ARREST the bastards who flout it.
Never mind a stay on such absurd “status”!
Not going to be pretty to remedy this crap...

BREAKING: Federal judge William Orrick (Obama appointee) in California has blocked the Trump administration from terminating federal funds for sanctuary jurisdictions. He writes in part:
“The Cities and Counties have also demonstrated a likelihood of irreparable harm. The threat to withhold funding causes them irreparable injury in the form of budgetary uncertainty, deprivation of constitutional rights, and undermining trust between the Cities and Counties and the communities they serve.”

Hey
@SpeakerJohnson
, maybe cut the little hiatus in half & recall the House & start the process of reining in this out of control activist judiciary.
SCOTUS, especially John Roberts, really screwed the country with those rulings last week.

Ignore the judge’s order. Federal funds are never assured and cities and states should not rely on them.
Yup—the judges who enable illegal immigration are guilty of RICO—conspiracy to aid and abet illegal immigration.
Has what to do with Roberts?
maybe to the point CONgress or the SCOTUS might do something??
ya, I know. wishful thinking
According to this judge, the US taxpayers have to continue furnishing funds to sanctuary cities/states who are in violation of federal law. Outrageous!!
he has done nothing to stop these judges and their clearly insane rulings.
These actions were very predictable and Pres Trump and his team should have prepared a response.
Ignore, proceed.
Judge Bars Trump has become a standard headline these past 3 months. Time for Judge removed from Office to replace it.
Another case that won’t survive appeal
“At some point Trump is going to be forced to suspend habeus corpus or just roll over.”
DC Draino https://x.com/DC_Draino was advocating it the other day in an interview with war room Steve Bannon.

Enough is enough - it’s time for President Trump to consider suspending the writ of Habeas Corpus to deport the millions of illegal aliens who invaded our country
It’s in the Constitution - Article 1, Section 9
It’s allowed when there is an invasion
FDR used it
Lincoln used it
Ulysses S. Grant used it
And all their faces ended up on our national currency
I hope Trump suspends habeas to repel this historic invasion - we’re more than ready to defend him and take our country back
the much easier solution would be to start arresting democrats for crimes. a judge acts up, arrest another democrat for crimes. etc etc... I would say about 5 arrests would be all that was needed before the democrats themselves stifle these judges...
