Bill Targets Indiana Treasurer Who Stops Banks From Canceling Christians, Gun Owners
The Federalist ^ | April 23, 2025 | Joy Pullmann

Indiana’s state treasurer repeatedly stood against big banks canceling accounts and releasing customer data of Christians and conservatives for viewpoint discrimination. A pending must-pass bill in Indiana’s Republican-run legislature would strip some of Treasurer Daniel Elliott’s powers and could give them to those same banks....

Elliott has been a key partner of a nationwide coalition of conservative financial elected officials, the State Financial Officers Foundation. As part of that coalition, he and some 25 other Republican state financial officers have fought financial discrimination against Christians and conservatives, ESG, and DEI....

In a 2024 Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) press conference, Elliott took a stand against pressure tactics the banking industry has used against conservatives and Christians. He said removing $13 billion in state business from Bank of America was on the table depending on how the bank responded to concerns from shareholders about its history of debanking Americans based on their political and religious views.

I still don’t see how they can legally discriminate against anyone. Civil Rights legislation prevented them from discriminating against blacks. At the time, people believed we’d lost ‘freedom of association’ not realizing how it could be used against everyone. If you offer a service, & someone wants to use that service & are not doing anything illegal, how do they get away with saying no?

No shoes, no shirt, no service. That kind of thing is prior to walking in the door. But if you’ve been a customer of a bank, & taking care of your account without issue, how can they just boot you out? If there was an actual issue, they should have to state what it is & be prepared to defend their action in court. We need more billionaires on our side willing to fight these things.

Republican ruled Indiana is what it is friendly to business.

Trucking companies can pull three trailers at a time across that state on the Indiana Turnpike I noticed back in 2016.

But this legislation reminds us that there is a low end to business-political cooperation of the kind Indiana politicians like Mike Pence have championed over the years.

Corporate Republicans are not on your side. Too many here on FR call this the “free market” when it is not.

Mitch Daniels was big business all the way. But Indiana has long been “employer biased” against even legitimate employee concerns q.
And I am not a big union fan.

Discrimination examples I’ve seen in the news include Christian businesses or charities being cancelled or refused banking accounts. The banks claim the accounts of such businesses are high risk and not in line with the bank’s risk profile, or the business is not the type of business with which the bank wants to be associated.

A Christian business valued at under a million dollars is not going to sue a bank for closing their account, when the bank can drag out the lawsuit for years, and can drive up legal fees for the plaintive to unacceptable levels.

With “Republicans” like this, there is no need for Democrats. Republicans are their own worst enemy.

The country club Republicans have no real love for the ordinary people yet generally they are much better than any Democrat.
