Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said on Sunday he does not think the law would allow President Trump to send United States citizens convicted of violent crimes to Salvadoran prisons, despite the president’s suggestion that he might be open to that possibility.
“No, ma’am. Nor should it be considered appropriate or moral,” Kennedy told NBC News’s Kristen Welker when asked on “Meet the Press” whether he thinks such a move would be legal.
“We have our own laws,” he continued. “We have the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. We shouldn’t send prisoners to foreign countries in my judgment.”
Trump, in a meeting Monday with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, indicated he would be open to sending American citizens who are violent criminals to El Salvador to be held in a notorious prison there.

We shouldn’t send America prisoners to foreign countries. However, foreigners should absolutely be sent elsewhere... they aren’t our problem.
“GOP senator [Kennedy-LA] says Trump shouldn’t send Americans to foreign prisons”
I’m not familiar with any AMERICANS being sent to foreign prisons. Is Trump now considering that or something?
I agree with Americans being met with American justice.
THESE CRIMINALS ARE NOT AMERICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is correct. An unforced error, presuming it was such, for Trump to repeatedly raise the possibility.
He said he was looking at it
I don’t think the President has the authority to send those being deported to a foreign prison. He does have the power to deport them to the authority of other nations which may have criminal charges pending against them. What happens then is up to that foreign government.
The Hill is lying and twisting words here.
As they usually do.
I should clarify. He absolutely does not have the power to send U.S. citizens to foreign prisons. The only exception would be if there is an extradition agreement at play. But for crimes committed on U.S. soil by U.S. citizens, No. 100% no. That would be a definite spit on the Constitution. It alarms me that Trump would even float such an idea.
Trump (and I did vote for him) needs to learn the virtue of curbing his tongue before letting each and every thought out.
I assume it will end at some point but I do think the shock value of the notorious El Salvador prison dominating American immigration news so much has to be a powerful and fearful topic of discussion among illegals and potential future illegals, very beneficial to discouraging them.
True, Americans !
So what about ‘resident aliens’ ?
Actually, senator kennedy, look at how immaculate and sanitary the El Salvador prison is compared to the filth and dangers of American prisons and it would be kinder to send them there.
Other than CECOT is spartan and highly controlled I don’t think it’s nearly as violent as average federal pen these days which all have crazy violence levels now
The worst being white boy “cars”
Trump knows he cant but hes just stirring the soup for the gullible. There should be a prison just like the one in el salvador dedicated to our heinous criminals and treated as the animals they are
I would agree unless they are foreign born US citizens. Then strip their citizenship and and send them away.
Trump stated he has "no issue" deporting "homegrown" violent criminals – whom he described as "really bad people" comparable to foreign offenders – to El Salvador
If Trump did use the term "American Citizens", he's made clear what he really means here.
President Trump is DEPORTING illegal immigrants back to their counties...The countries themselves are imprisoning them...
One of Trump’s tactics is to stretch the boundaries by staking out extreme positions. Democrats do this too. Then, when real proposals hit the streets, they sound relatively acceptable by comparison. I think the media, as obtuse as they really are, recognize this game and just react to it to raise hackles.
“He said he was looking at it.”
Thanks - well, he’s entitled to his opinion. If they’re naturalized, then pull their citizenship, and then ship them out. If really American, then it can be debated. Personally, I like the idea of getting them away from Democrats and Judges, so that they can stay locked up for a while. And, in reality, it would be no worse than what the Jan 6th guys went through.
