For Canadian voters, blink and you could practically miss this campaign. Not only is it lightning fast at just five weeks long, but the ho-hum pace of the race means that the tone and tenor haven’t changed much since the election was called in late March.
That doesn’t mean Canadians have tuned out, quite the opposite: early ratings indicate they watched with interest as national leaders – including Prime Minister Mark Carney and his key rival Pierre Poilievre – debated in both French and English the last couple of evenings in Montreal.
Two men not on stage were nonetheless top of mind, as they have been throughout the campaign: US President Donald Trump and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trump has proven a convenient foil for Carney, a political rookie who has been Canada’s leader for only a matter of weeks.
Carney mentioned Trump and his threats early and often in the debates.
“We can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump can ever take away,” said Carney within minutes, setting the tone for the two-hour face-off between four Canadian party leaders, rounded out by Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet, and leader of the New Democratic Party Jagmeet Singh.
That statement was followed up later by his answer to an open-ended question: how would you lead in a crisis? Carney didn’t have to mention President Trump or his threats, but he did.
“In a crisis, you got to plan for the worst, the worst is that the US actually does want to take us over,” said Carney, referring to Trump’s threats to annex Canada and make it America’s 51st state.
And then, as if Canadians needed more reminders, his closing statement was blunt, foreboding and all about the American threat.

Anger and fear are what leftist propaganda organs like CNN spend all their time whipping up everywhere.
There should be zero trade barriers between the US and Canada. Everything else is just wind.
Trump was trying to do that with Trudeau. Originally, Trudeau came to Mar-A-Lago to make a deal. May have received pushback from his Cabinet. Had to resign as a result.
Just as being Canadian must be difficult for the tiny number of military warrior types the country has, imagine what it is like for the small number of conservatives who live there.
A lot of California conservatives suffer but they are part of a larger nation, in Canada, the country is all California with no place to escape to except foreign lands.
We love Canadians, because we remember them as the nice guys in red flannel 80 yrs ago.
They are more Cuba and Pakistan today. And they don’t like us.
As a Canadian expat (proud legal US citizen now), zero trade barriers between Canada and the USA would be a boon for Canadians. Opening up the vast natural resources that Canada holds would be a boon for the western world.
I believe the CBC is built upon the same model.
Sadly, that’s true. Their immigration policy has destroyed the country. Very little time left to save it.
PP’s lead dissipated with Trump’s threats, but no serious Canadian takes him literally. They’ve learned what US liberals never learned. Take Trump seriously, but not literally.
It’s not in the bag for Carney.
Politically, Pollievre = Trump, Carney = Harris. Populist vs. Establishment.
Are you proposing zero tariffs, or zero barriers?
Won't happen.
Perhaps in 10 years, Alberta will have a referendum to join USA.
But we'll see. We are not really that much better off than Canada. We almost voted Kamala Harris in the White House in 2024. No reason why that can't happen in 2028 or 2032.
We may be one election away and that will be the end of the American Republic.
It's done deal. Bet your house on it.
Elect someone who is worse than Justin Trudeau!
That will show Trump!
Then why feed it?
There should be zero trade barriers [or subsidies] between the US and Canada. Everything else is just wind.
Fixed. Voters do sway in the wind.
In 2021, I played golf with an old school buddy (Macomb County, MI) whose family has owned a place in Goderich, Ontario for 40 years now. He was really disappointed that they were not allowed to cross the border to use it during COVID. He also stated that he was “glad it happened” when the subject of J6 came up while waiting to tee off. I think all that time in Canada has really softened his brain. Either that or it’s because he has a wife and three daughters.
It’s really sad when “journalists” and politicians based their whole lives on hate.
I think you are correct. Canadians were just looking for a reason to keep the liberals in power and the BS “I’m starting strong against mean Mr.Trump” act Carney trotted out was just the ticket. They will regret this within days
They're adults. They're responsible enough to make their own decisions.
Five more years of economic stagnation and open borders.
We'll see how Alberta reacts.
Trump has triggered the emergence of a nationalist MCGA movement in Canada.
