I believe Trump is following the Reagan strategy, trying to lower cost of oil including having Saudi Arabia increase production I believe. Russia has lost a lot already and will not be able to keep it up if their oil revenue dries up. Reagan did it by having Saudi Arabia up production, by not helping Poland financially (forcing USSR to bear the burden of their invasion) and of course starting a new arms race with SDI (Star Wars).
