Well, I don’t know if he has or hasn’t, but the time has come, prepared or not, to make this break with Communist China.

We cannot proceed as a serf-state to them.

Back to when you stepped on the gas...and the sounds told you what was wrong.

And you went to sleep at night knowing your car wasn't going to burst into flames.

“We also have all the rare earth metals we need in Nevada”

PhD Geologist can confirm. That said there is no quick fix the infrastructure to mine and more importantly process REEs takes years to finance, permit ,build and actuate the output of metal oxides.

Let me be absolutely clear there is no way the USA can even with a crash course get REE oxides from domestic sources in under 24 months likely 60 at minimum and that’s assumes the EPA permits came tomorrow. The manufactures of the large mining equipment, smelters and blast furnaces yeah that’s China ,India or Korea we don’t have the technical capability any more here those industries left years ago. Russia could bail us out , or maybe India but the USA lacks the ability to go alone in this field period full stop.

I used to use an emery board, a screwdriver, a pocket knife and a spark plug wrench to tune up, clean the points, set the plug gap, and make my 74 Camaro run like new.

This move would not have been made without taking that circumstance into consideration and having a contingency plan to deal with it.

Oh yes, the good ole days when cars were simple and ran for ever with regular oil change. The only breakdowns I ever had were 1 fuel pump and a leaky water pump. Both cheap repairs. Now I need a mortgage loan to replace the computer.

And the computer relies on some failure prone sensors.
monitoring in milliseconds just makes for more adjustments (change=chances to fail) to what should be a pretty stable system. Whether a V-8 or a turbojet the basic principle of suck, squeeze, bang, blow still applies.

Maybe India just moved to the front of the line for trade deals. I am sure that the EPA hurdles can be overcome quickly but it will still take time. Hope Trump has people working on this. We should have done this years ago.

Why there are so many sensors in modern cars? I know how they got there. Because of obsession about law mandated MPG requirements. They try to extract every ounce of fuel mileage...only when all sensors are working perfectly. But the car prices are becoming unaffordable for many folks with all that complexity.

I wonder if it is possible to rebuild the engine with all the complexity removed and add on old fashioned distributor and carburetor LOL

You know who has a HUGE amount of rare earths, produces zero, and is set to start massive production? Greenland.

Who among us thought Trump hadn’t worked out these supply problems beforehand?

He seems to live in a cocoon. There were a lot of warnings about this for quite sometime now. It's like he's the last one to know. Example:

John Rich Told Donald Trump Why He Was Being Booed at His Own Rallies

"Country singer John Rich said during a podcast interview released on Monday that he advised Donald Trump to stop talking about the COVID-19 vaccines when the president asked why he was being booed at his own rallies."
