President Donald Trump knows his hike in tariffs for China's goods to 145 percent will up the ante in a trade war, but Beijing also holds a strong hand with its control of the materials critical for the United States defense industry. China first responded on April 3 to Trump's initial salvo of 54 percent levies on its exports by placing export restrictions on rare earth elements, which are key for the fighter aircraft that will form the backbone of the U.S. Air Force's next-generation fleet. Following a deal with Boeing, Trump has touted the F-47 as the successor to the F-22 Raptor. But the viability of the U.S. Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program depends heavily on the materials China produces.
They include seven categories of medium and heavy rare earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium and yttrium.

Oh, but that would disturb the environ-mint.
THACKER PASS IN N NEVADA HAS SUCH
ALSO SOMEWHERE IN WYOMING
It seems pretty obvious to me that the US "Defense Industry" should be dependent on nothing from our most dangerous military threat, but I did not go to West Point or the Naval Academy.
Articles like this are why these major news outlets never ever say anything anti China. The Chinese more then likely are paying news outlets like Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal to practically put the Chinese flag behind them when they write the article.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anti China article in Newsweek
It’s not the existence of rare earths. The USA has resources which can be mined.
its that the US has shut its mines, and processing is an energy-intensive and dirty business. NIMBY and environmentalists will always oppose them.
the USA ceded this business to China in the 1990s for these reasons. This has also put China far ahead on the engineering and applied science curve with regards to rare earths.
the US can just TAKE IT from Greenland.
No, the "initial" actions were China's now long standing tariffs. It is Trump who has been forced to "respond".
The MSM openly hoping for America’s failure because of their outright hatred for Trump. It’s truly to see the so called objective media deliberately turning a blind eye to the people responsible for America’s economic and societal decline while bashing the ones trying to restore the nation.
What’s good for America is bad for Democrats and the political left and vice versa. Yes, we say this a million times over, but we always need to remember our adversaries care only for power and control, and not what’s good for the country and its people.
Fly ash.
From burning coal.
We have all the rare earths we need right in this country all over the western states. We just refuse to mine them. If China cuts us off we will have to employ Americans to mine it in our own country. The horror!
Concerning rare earth, let’s do a fair deal with Ukraine... Greenland...

A fair deal with Ukraine would be to have Russia and the US confiscate and control all their rare earth minerals. More control favoring Russia as they have lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers due to US/NATO aggression.
The US has only lost a half trillion dollars or so supporting the Ukes.
The term rare earth is now a misnomer touted only by the propagandist academia and media.
Yeah. The media should keep highlighting how much we depend on from China. That should make us rethink decoupling from them. Idiots.
Anywhere there is ancient, or past volcanic activity.
There is where there is minerals.
China can go piss up a tree.
Mine baby mine, dig baby dig !
The problem is that we are right now dependent on Chinese rare earth mineral. It’s a sad fact.
I like the Drill Drill Drill logic for our own oil.
We now also need to Dig! Dig! Dig! logic for our own minerals.
There is no choice. It has to be done urgently.
We all need to line up and kiss a China man’s arse to show them how grateful we are to have them.
Rare Earth isn’t just a treasure of distant lands — it’s right here, beneath American soil.
What we need now is simple and strong:
Dig. Dig. Dig.
No hesitation, no delay — just decisive action.
Because the most beautiful word ever spoken, the one generations of Americans bled and fought for, is:
INDEPENDENCE.
