Rahm Emanuel: ‘Can’t Get Tariffs High Enough’ on China, They Steal and Spy
Breitbart ^ | 04/08/2025 | Ian Hanchett

Posted on 04/08/2025 5:26:21 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC360,” CNN Senior Political and Global Affairs Commentator, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, former Chicago Mayor, and former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel stated that “you can’t get tariffs high enough for me” on China due to their intellectual property theft and economic spying, but the Trump tariff plan is pushing Japan and South Korea towards China.

Emanuel said that the Trump tariff plan is more damaging to America’s allies than its adversaries and added, “[J]ust take one part of the world I’m very familiar with in Asia, China, you can’t get tariffs high enough for me, because they steal intellectual property, economic espionage, they take our AI, etc.”

He continued, “We worked tirelessly to get Japan and Korea, who were not exactly on the best terms, to work with the United States on export controls, agreements. Japan is the number one foreign direct investor in the United States, a million Americans work for them, for the last four years. They are the biggest investor. They now have a meeting where, rather than isolate China, they’re working together and they’re isolating us. Samsung just announced a major deal with a Chinese semiconductor [producer] when they were part of the export control. So, this is rather than — let me say it this way, they gave China a get-out-of-jail card and now we’re back in the prison box.”

but the Trump tariff plan is pushing Japan and South Korea towards China.

><

It won’t. Japan, Vietnam and South Korea will negotiate, leaving China in the dust. If China fails to negotiate, all the Chinese production will move to Japan, Vietnam and South Korea. China will be forced to negotiate.

Vietnam......

President Trump seemed to allude to the fact that Vietnam was receiving Chinese goods and selling them as Vietnamese origin.

Does Vietnam have clean hands?

China is screwed every way. They can’t afford 0 tariffs. If they don’t have 0 tariffs, then, as you said, supply chains and manufacturing will move.

Once they are boxed in, countries like Vietnam and Cambodia won’t agree to jeopardize their agreement with the US knowing that supply lines will just move next door.

When your enemy agrees with you, it’s wise to ask, “Why?”

Agree. China is the US most difficult trading partner, they are trying to hold out and will still cheat in any agreement. I believe that Japan, Korea etc know that they will have to give the US trade concessions, but they also realize that US would rather buy electronics and other high value manufacturing products from military allies than China, so they’re positioning to pick up China’s lost market share with US.
This whole Trump strategy is cover to move trade away with China. Once other supply chains are created that exclude China, US will be in a much stronger position.

A win-win for the US and the rest of Asia, and a lose-lose if China doesn’t negotiate. One that puts a damper on Xi’s ambitions to take Taiwan, adding a third win for the US and the rest of Asia.

“When your enemy agrees with you, it’s wise to ask, ‘Why?’”

That really bears repeating.

No one should talk about China without mentioning the Clintons, Loral/Hughes, China-gate, John Huang, Charlie Trie, etc. The sellout of America to China started with the Clintons.

Both parties are for the most part anti-tariff, it’s wise to ask, “Why?”
