Coons: Tariffs Would Take a While and Costs of Manufacturing In U.S. ‘Still Too High’
Breitbart ^ | 04/05/2025 | Ian hatchett

Posted on 04/05/2025 9:54:46 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

On Friday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “On Balance,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) stated that large tariffs won’t bring back steel or auto plants to his state “in less than five or ten years. And the costs of competing, of manufacturing here in the United States are still too high.”

Coons said, “There was a 100-year-old steel mill in Claymont, Delaware. We worked hard to try and save it, but, ultimately, it closed. There were two auto plants in Delaware. Ultimately, they closed. High tariffs won’t bring those plants back in less than five or ten years. And the costs of competing, of manufacturing here in the United States are still too high.”

A co-worker yesterday got hysterical about tariffs and I got into a bit of an argument with her and now this idiot. I'm losing my patience.

What is he saying thats incorrect?

Between the high cost of labor, labor protection laws, the regulatory environment, etc. etc., you just can’t pop a manufacturing plant somewhere in 6 months, its time consuming and very expensive.

Also, whats to say the new President in 4 years won’t scrap tariffs altogether? Any business wanting to set up shop here has to take the longer term challenges into consideration.

Sorry to bother you with the reality of running a business, and the decisions that have to be made.

Oh, really, Great Gazoo? How long have you been a Senator and what have you done to bring back steel or auto plants to Delaware?

This guy Coons is a moron. There have been quite a few auto manufacturing plants and steel mills built in the U.S. over the last 30 years.

The ones he cited didn’t close down because they couldn’t be profitable in the U.S. They closed down because they couldn’t be profitable in DELAWARE.

“We need illegals to do our jobs, making and growing things.”

“We can’t compete because it’s too expensive to make and grow things here.”

“Soon robots/AI will take all our jobs, they’ll make, grow and manage everything.”

Above is a sample of the schizophrenic messaging we’ve been given for years.

He spoke of trying to save a steel plant. People don’t realize that a plant is literally constructed for whatever process it uses. A plant built for the way steel was made even twenty years ago probably could not be easily remade to match the thermal and product efficiency of a more modern process. The whole building, every bit of it would need to be reengineered. It’s like turning office buildings into apartments. It would be wildly more expensive than just building an apartment building.

A modern plant could be automated to eliminate some of the labor costs in the US. Much of the cost is governmental. Environment regulations, approvals, all kinds of site surveys. That process can take years. When Elon went into China, the government did all the paperwork, and he was building his plant in the first week. That’s the kind of efficiency we need. The governmental delay overhead is intended to suck as much money from every project as possible.

A big trouble for any large facility is that they can’t move.
Once in place and running, a manufacturing plant is at the mercy of predatory politics.

They need a Prop 13 or other restriction on confiscatory regulations.

With crazy high labor costs within the US, there will be an increasing trend for robots to take over these jobs. Then there will jobs building, installing and maintaining the robots.

The way it is now they won’t come back at all and in time you’ll be losing miney for youyr product faster and more expensive than you can buy it from other countries. And you are not competing with your comptition when you went broke trying to by a trading deficit and now there is no competition from you.

If you can’t win, then try to even up the score and charge them as much to sell as it is for you to buy. Then you hold the purse, not them. You may bleed, but not to death. They have had it easy because of people like you letting them twist the knife. Unarmed you’re a burial plot that you dug for yourself.

“Get rid of unions, Coons.”
It is not just unions, it is the Democrat party.
We are forced to support people that refuse to
contribute to society. That is expensive.
Farm workers, even illegals( as long as the farm owners care for them fairly) don’t bother me as much
as the trash camping out on our streets, getting free food from Union Gospel missions, and filling up our emergency rooms.
I don’t mind helping the homeless, but that help comes with rules(I don’t always agree with), but if you refuse, then as far as I’m concerned you are totally on your own!

Obama said there was no point in drilling for oil for the same reason.

Please cite a source for those figures. I can’t speak for Mexico, but I’d be shocked if Canadian labor only cost $20/hour in the auto industry.
