Tariffs Are The Only Way To Restore America’s Long-Term Economic Health
The Federalist ^ | April 03, 2025 | Sean Davis

America has become addicted to cheap foreign baubles and easy money (i.e., fake fiat currency) at the expense of its long-term economic health. We allowed ourselves to be transformed from a cast iron economy that made things into a largely paper economy that depends on the good graces of foreign nations for its survival. This is a recipe for civilizational suicide.

We don’t make our own weapons, food, machines, vehicles, plastics, medicines, or computers. The whole Covid insanity, with its shutdowns and shortages and supply-chain chaos, was a blaring alarm warning us that the economy we thought was so strong was shockingly fragile.

Imagine a prosperous farmer, now surrounded by enemies and competitors, who, over time, outsourced most farming activities to his neighbors because they could do the work and provide the materials more cheaply than he could. He sold off his equipment and laid off his farmhands because it was just easier and less expensive for others to do the work and maintain the machinery.

But one day, his neighbors said, “No more,” and now he finds himself unable to fertilize his land, plow his fields, or harvest his crops. Even if he had kept his old tractors and implements, he sold off all his welding equipment and spare parts and raw materials, so repairing anything would be impossible. On top of that, he doesn’t remember all that much about repairing the equipment anyway because he hasn’t done it for years.

So now he finds himself in control of once-fertile and productive land that he can’t utilize, and the people he used to rely on for help now refuse to lift a finger because they see an opportunity to bankrupt their old neighbor and business partner, allowing them to buy up all that land for themselves at fire sale...

It is my understanding that right now the U.S. military is using munitions in which the nitro-cellulose was obtained from Red China because our nation can't manufacture enough.

I thought this was prohibited by federal law; must be a quite exemption on national security grounds.

No the BEST way to restore America and her economic health as well as her people's constitutionally protected lives, liberties, and free pursuits is to ABOLISH THE 80%+, $3+ TRILLION UNCONSTITUTIONAL MONSTROSITY OF THE FEDERAL GOV'T

Among other things, there would be no need for tariffs because American industry would BOOM!!!

I agree with the sentiment and totally agree that the USA (and Canada) through Walmart and Dollar store, as a couple examples, exported its production capabilities to China. Dollar Store is one of the best performing stocks this year in Canada. I say this because I know the US posters feel Canada has been “ripping them off” but beg you to consider that both countries are victims of offshoring to China. And there are other countries in that same boat - like Japan - another country that doesn’t make anything anymore. They design the product but it gets made in China.

I like the Federalist so am more than willing to consider what they have to say. There have been people in the wilderness speaking about this for decades - such as Peter Schiff, and wasn’t there a man named Duncan Hunter, who was also screaming about this.

That would probably take a restructuring\revaluing of the currency. I wonder what the ratio of old to new would be?

For example, take your current salary, assets, etc and divide by 10, by 100, by 1000, etc. Price of course would adjust but that’s what other countries had to do. Can people take economically, politically and psychologically?

“Buy American,” Bessent said bluntly. He also clarified that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) exempts certain vehicles and parts from the new tariffs.
Collins attempted to raise concerns from U.S. allies, questioning what the administration would say to countries like South Korea and Japan, which are now facing increased tariffs. Bessent’s response was direct: “Well, I would say they’ve been doing it to us for a long time. And, if they don’t like tariffs, then why do they have them?” His answer underscored the administration’s stance that America has been on the losing end of trade deals for too long.
As for whether the tariffs should be considered permanent, Bessent took a wait-and-see approach. “I think we’re gonna wait and see how this plays out,” he explained, suggesting that adjustments could be made based on how the policy unfolds.

The powers that be who’ve gotten filthy rich shipping American middle class jobs to China couldn’t care less about America’s working poor. The working poor are Trump’s first concern. Trump did more for the working poor first term than anyone since FDR. His tariffs will be the driving force in bringing those people back into the middle class. I’m with Trump!
