Russia not on Trump's tariff list
BBC ^ | April 3, 2025 | Vitaliy Shevchenko

One country that did not feature on Donald Trump's list of tariffs on US trade partners was Russia.

US outlet Axios quoted White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as saying this was because existing US sanctions on Russia "preclude any meaningful trade" and noting that Cuba, Belarus and North Korea were also not included.

However, nations with even less trade with the US - such as Syria, which exported $11m of products last year according to UN data quoted by Trading Economics - were on the list.

The US imposed large-scale sanctions on Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump has generally taken a friendlier approach to Russia since his return to the White House.

This claim has been posted a lot on X.

I have nothing authoritative on this and hope someone knows more than me. Take the following for what it's worth.

One response is that the US has sanctioned Russia. It's been claimed that Mexico and Canada are not on the list, because we made separate agreements with those two nations. This may be a non-sequitur but at least shows that the list is not exhaustive.

Anyway, the left thinks they have a conclusive argument here. I think they will be proven wrong once again. However, it often takes time for the truth to come out.

Yeah, because they’re already sanctioned. Do people need this explained?

So, BBC, you seem surprised that countries the US does not trade with are not getting tariffs?

Really?

Umm, any of your staff smart enough to dig into British history enough to note that y’all did not trade with Nazi Germany in ‘41-45? No? Imagine my surprise.

What a pack of asholes.

The left always denies that “Orange Man” has sanctioned Russia.

I remember SOS Clinton agreeing to sell Uranium to Russia (after they gave $200M to the Clinton Foundation).

As Karoline Leavitt pointed out, Cuba, North Korea and Belarus aren’t on the list either.

Dumb article indeed.

Russia is in a different category and it’s not favored or friend. Special treatment depending on how they respond to Trump’s peace overtures.

Aren’t we in effect, trading to “buy” our uranium back, that we previously controlled, before the Clintons traded it away in exchange for Clinton Foundation family donations?

Typical of the media only giving out half of the story.

There is already a 35% tariff on Russian lumber.
IT went on after the invasion of Ukraine.

FYI, some of the nicest Nordic Spruce lumber/timber in the world comes from Russia. All the German/Swedish mills were buying it too.

This is just leftist noise. The focus should be on countries with most trade with U.S.

“As Karoline Leavitt pointed out, Cuba, North Korea and Belarus aren’t on the list either.”

We sanction Iran yet they are on the tariff list. Something seems inconsistent.
