Keir Starmer should fight back strongly against Donald Trump if he imposes punitive tariffs on British exports, senior UK and EU diplomats said on Saturday night, amid heightened fears that the US president could trigger a global trade war with devastating effects on the UK economy.
British government officials in London and Washington are working frantically this weekend to try to persuade Trump not to slap duties on more key UK industries on what he is calling “liberation day” on Wednesday. The US president has already announced plans for 25% levies on imports of cars, steel and aluminium to the US.

Starmer: I,I, I’d get t-tough if only my knees would stop knocking together. 😨
Stand up to him like Zelensky did.
Turnabout isn’t fair play anymore?
You go boy! 😂😂😂
Next year makes 80 years since the end of WW2 and 30 years since the end of the Cold War.
Politicians don’t remember past the last few news cycles and look forward only to their next election or graft scheme.
I believe that specialization and economy of scale, a natural tendency for certain areas to have a competitive advantage benefits all in a free market.
However, there are 100s of ways that nations game / manipulate trade in order to promote exports and investments, but discourage imports.
These often somewhat obscure barriers to a free market usually come in the form of “bogus” safety, environmental standards, or creative tax policies that discourage imports.
History has proven that trying to achieve a negotiated settlement regards free trade where specific barriers were erected simply does not work. As soon as you tear down some barrier, another is created, slightly different, and outside the scope of the negotiated settlement.
So what to do? Focus on the bottom line.
With those countries where you know you do not have fair trade and they play games, where you have huge trade deficits, focus on the bottom line of the deficit. Instead of addressing each individual issue and trying to negotiate some agreement, instead of an army of bureaucrats that are needed to monitor and control everything, simply put the onus on them by enacting a tariff until the deficit comes down.
If they want to trade, let them fix themselves.
He’s gonna slap President Trump with his handbag?

Kier is tough as bandannas.
A small, soggy and dank island ruled by inbred jackasses lording it over their betters think that they can bully the with their withered and flaccid military can bully the United States. What is he going to do with the sad rump of the British Empire? How delusional.
Just to pick one issue. They spent essentially their entire navy budget on an aircraft carrier that can’t operate safely unless it’s integrated into a US carrier task group.
They seriously, as a national priority, need a free trade agreement with the US. Without it, their economy will continue to slide into oblivion. They should be playing nice. There aren’t a lot of other options.
They wouldn't be able to pull off the Falklands today.
England should focus on deporting their invading hordes of non-whites
FWIW, I concur with this thoughtful post. Thanks.
‘They wouldn’t be able to pull off the Falklands today. ‘
The Falkland Islanders would be better off being a part of Argentina, something I suspect they’re leaning toward.
“Keir Starmer should be seeking a good relationship with the nation that saved his nations a** in WWII. “
And in WWI.
1980s. No.
2025? Argentina.
I would encourage Javier Milei to annex the Falklands.
But Keir Starmer wouldn't allow that to happen.
Brit Commies want Keir to stand up to Trump?
They have deep pockets?
Little Bill Trump: You been talking about that queen of yours, again, Kier?
(tariffing intensifies)
Little Bill Trump: On Independence Day? (more booting)
English Kier: Ooof, Owie owie! I say, please desist
