Mississippi is bringing back a “competitive” edge with Gov. Tate Reeves’ (R) signing of legislation to phase out the state income tax, and he discussed what this means for the state during an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday.
“So this is House Bill 1 that I signed into law on Thursday afternoon. And honestly, Matt, it’s really what I have called Mississippi’s one big, beautiful bill, and it is a bill that does a couple of different things,” Reeves began, explaining that it reduces the sales tax on groceries across the state and, over a period of time, eliminates the state income tax.

Excellent!
The SE USA is an ideal place for manufacturing.... IF companies commit to workforce training. Business friendly laws and lower costs of living with plenty of underemployed folks.
Keep the income tax. Use it to get rid of the property tax.
Sales tax on groceries takes a bite out of a family’s food budget.
As a guy who moved from a high income tax state across the river to a NO income tax state, I like it too.
But being a Tennessee native I know the games too. Look for the sales tax to creep up, and/or the property taxes as well.
It would have been a GREAT bill had they repealed the income tax (in a way that required nearly impossible heroics to change), along with capping the sales tax where it is now, and at least capping the property tax rate where it is now.
I’m also in favor of repealing that, but with the way roads are these days, the money to maintain that has to come from SOMEWHERE.
If I didn’t hate heat so much I would be there. My Northern European blood can’t handle that.
Mississippi is high on my list for places to retire. This would make it move to the top 2 or 3.
You can control consumption, or if necessary schedule trips across state borders for high-dollar purchases. Land doesn't move, and you're subject to the vagaries of the market and the whim of the local property assessor. I'd prefer a straight consumption tax.
I’m from Mississippi and still have a home there but my primary residence is Florida, I got it years ago to escape the income tax. It’s a great move by Mississippi but if you read the fine print it isn’t fully gone until 2037. You can bet that if in the meantime MS gets a democrat governor it’ll be repealed. As of now most of Mississippi’s productive people leave to escape the income tax. If this ever gets implemented it’ll be a boon for the state.
The only good tax is a dead tax!
I don’t have anything against a state income tax per se. The state has to get money in some way and there are arguments against high sales taxes and high property taxes. If a state income tax is flat and simple, it is a good way to raise revenue in a fair way.
