Vladimir Putin has said the United States is “serious” about taking Greenland and warned Russia is ready and willing to militarily “protect its interests in the arctic.”
It comes as Ukraine’s allies, including the United Kingdom, met in France to discuss peacekeeping plans in the event of a ceasefire.
Britain and France confirmed on Thursday they are drawing up plans to send a "reassurance force" to Ukraine and will soon send military chiefs to the country to determine the scheme’s viability.
Speaking after the announcement, Russia’s Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to NATO countries as he declared Russia is ready to protect its land in the arctic if Donald Trump goes ahead with his plan to purchase Greenland.
"It would be a grave mistake to think that this is just some eccentric talk of the new American administration, nothing of the kind," he said.
He added that the US had previously drawn up plans to take Greenland in the nineteenth century, but these were abandoned.
"Those plans have deep historic roots and it is obvious that the US will continue to promote their geopolitical, military and economic interests in the Arctic.
"As for Greenland, I think that this is an issue that concerns two states and has nothing to do with us.
"However, we are concerned by the fact that the NATO countries increasingly identify the far north as a foothold for possible conflicts."

Folks might think putin has lost too many soldiers to start any other wars, but Russia has the second largest army in the world after China, and while he has lost a lot, its a drop in the bucket compared to overall numbers. He would however be a fool to wage war agaisnt the us.
Sounds like Canada needs to add a crash program of building more ice breakers along with revamping their entire military to replace what the US has been inexplicably covering for them, al the while they gouge the US on predatory tariffs on US goods into Canada. Times they are a changing.

Greenland isn't all that big as is commonly assumed. It's teh Mercator Projection distortion that makes it look bigger than it really is. A Polar Projection shows it more closer to its real size as compared to Asia, Europe, and North America............

Putin isn’t going to wage a war against the US. This is posturing to say we will be watching out for our interests in that region.
As far as the EU sending a “reassurance force” to Ukraine? What the hell is that? Are the pantywaists in Brussels going? Hah, They should write their obituaries before the trip to Ukraine.
Putin needs to be held for war crimes. And Zelensky needs to face a judge over corruption.
Just how does Putin / Russia have any say re Greenland? I get that they have preferences but that’s about it. Careful Vlad. Trump is throwing you lifelines that are mutually beneficial. That can go away very quickly. Methinks Putin is trying to Imitate Trumps art of the deal and attempting to “negotiate” Bigly. Not going to work for him like it does for Trump.

From this excerpt, it sounds like “US, yes; NATO, no.”
That makes some sense to me. At the current time, it seems that NATO nations want a face-off against Russia. The US, with Trump as President, does not want conflict with Russia.
However, the US is Jekyll and Hyde with Trump and Obama/Biden. Just the same, US incorporation of Greenland is less threatening to Russia than including Greenland in NATO.

Lots of dicussions, lots of "depending on," and lots of "in the event of a ceasefire," though media has said there was -- and also was not, depending on which one reads -- a ceasefire.
The buffet in France must be quite sumptuous to lure in European leaders, while Russian and American leaders are not in attendance.

For people who are not aware, about 10 or so years ago Russia did a publicity stunt (that is not too useful if no one sees it, but whatever).
They had one of their mini-submarines with extension arms on it dive down outside the ice, deeper below the ice and using very precise navigation (no GPS down there) they planted a Russian flag on the seafloor, at the exact location of the geographic North Pole. It is still there.
The sophistication of Russian technology is profound and there is a very dangerous habit in the West to ridicule it.
