President Donald Trump said on March 25 that government officials likely will not be using the Signal messaging app after The Atlantic magazine’s editor-in-chief was inadvertently included in a group chat with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and national security adviser Mike Waltz.
When asked about the Signal chat during remarks at the White House on March 25, Trump said: “A lot of times you find out defects by exactly things like that, but I don’t think it’s something we’re looking forward to using again.
“We may be forced to use it. You may be in a situation where you need speed as opposed to gross safety, and you may be forced to use it, but generally speaking, I think we probably won’t be using it very much.”
The fallout came after Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, alleged that he saw a discussion between Hegseth and other officials take place in a group chat he was added to in the Signal messaging app hours before strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen ordered by Trump earlier this month.
The National Security Council has since said the text chain Goldberg reported “appears to be authentic” and that it is looking into how a journalist’s number was added to the chain.

It’s obvious that the system has some serious flaws.
No need to update a 30 person group on real time operational situations anyway. If it’s that important then make plans for a secure line.
This was a terrible judgement error, unforced error.
Why isn’t Jeffrey Goldberg being brought up on charges of treason?
Translation: Trump is signaling to the press that the press themselves are saying it was so horribly wrong for Trump’s team to leak to the press their “war plans”. So the press shouldn’t feel bad when Trump tells them “no comment” on real war plans.
Is the Atlantic going to be prosecut4ed for its role in this?
Duh
This would be like txting your girl friend on a chat and not knowing how your wife's number became part of the group. Not good....Not good at all.
Lurleen should take a fall.
Trump’s own response to this whole thing has been very good
I am amazed it was used!
The guidance from my last DOD contract was never use it!
RE: Is the Atlantic going to be prosecut4ed for its role in this?
The only prosecutable offense would be HACKING.
But being inadvertently added to a group chat through no fault of your own is not prosecutable.
It remains to be seen if the Atlantic making public details of the attack plan AFTER THE FACT is worthy of prosecution.
An ethical person (NOT jeff) would disconnect as soon as they realized it wasn’t their call. I’ve done it. But......’gotcha’ mind set held by journalists got the better of jeff.
The Signal app was not the problem. That someone one Walz’s staff gave the Atlantic journalist access to the chat was THE PROBLEM, the only problem.
RE: It’s obvious that the system has some serious flaws.
You may be using the most secure communication system in the world but the weakest link is STILL whoever doesn’t keep his mouth shut.
The reason the feral government told people to use it is because they have the keys to the backdoor.
Fact # 1
The operation was successful as planned.
Fact # 2
No lives on our side were lost
Fact # 3
13 soldiers died due to Biden’s incompetent Afghan withdrawal.
RE: The Signal app was not the problem
Actually, there’s reason not to trust it any longer for meetings like this.
Signal was supposed to be encrypted. Hong Kong protesters were using Signal and the other secure app Telegram to communicate with each other to protect messages from the prying eyes of the CCP. That was 2019.
The CCP has an army of Cybersecurity experts and hackers who had 6 years to learn the encryption scheme of these apps ( both downloadable ).
You can never be sure.
But you can develop the most secure communication system in the world but if you have a traitor in your midst, the entire system is useless.
RE: Fact # 1
The operation was successful as planned.
Will this operation stop the Houthis from disrupting shipping in that area from now on?
It is looking into how a journalist’s number was added to the chain.
Only a few people are allowed to do so shouldn’t be hard to find clearance is required to do it.
