Over 4 million Gen Zers are jobless—and experts blame colleges for ‘worthless degrees’ and a system of broken promises for the rising number NEETs

Over 4 million Gen Zers are not in school or work in the U.S. and in the U.K. 100,000 young people joined the NEETs cohort. But it’s not generational laziness that’s to blame. Experts are taking swipes at “worthless degrees” and a system that “is failing to deliver on its implicit promise.”

There’s been a mass derailment when it comes to Gen Z and their careers: about a quarter of young people are now deemed NEETs—meaning they are no longer in education, employment, or training.

While some Gen Zers may fall into this category because they are taking care of a family member, many have become frozen out of the increasingly tough job market where white-collar jobs are becoming seemingly out of reach.

In the U.S., this translates to an estimated over 4.3 million young people not in school or work. Across the pond in the U.K., the situation is also only getting worse, with the number of NEET young people rising by over 100,000 in the last year alone.

“Universities aren’t deliberately setting students up to fail, but the system is failing to deliver on its implicit promise,” Maleh tells Fortune.

That generation got screwed in so many ways. The whole post-9/11 America, with the 2008 crash, smart phones and social media, Obama, Biden, COVID — everything was stacked against them, It’s pretty easy to look down on young people and criticize them for their imperfections, but they grew up in a world created by their elders, and their elders screwed them.

I’m hoping that Trump can reverse a lot of this, but I think Gen Z is a lost generation and I expect a lot of them to never recover.

Well, when I found myself with an out of date career, I went to school to be a nurse because that’s where the jobs were. This is something most people shun like the plague. But, I’ve never lacked for a well paying job in almost 20 yrs. I now have 2 masters degrees and at 60 I am still in demand. It is agent to start, but many paths to take once you get experience. I can’t feel sorry for people who make stupid decisions about a college major. They should have done their research.

Likely true, but Elon Musk posted several months ago some stats indicating that all new jobs for the year went to illegals. A friend was laid off from factory work, the factory shut down and retooled, the factory work rehired illegals under some ‘program.’

1. A lot of them are probably unemployed by choice. They can probably find jobs, just not jobs that are to their liking. And the UK has a generous "dole" that makes it easy for people to be picky about jobs.

2. An increasing percentage of young people are migrants, or children of migrants. They specifically came to the UK for the dole. Why would they accept a job now?

Remember that Harvard and other fine institutions set up safe rooms for the tender little babies when Trump won the election.

NEET - Non Educated Expendable Twit

No sympathy for theses idiots who can’t figure out what gender they are and I’ll blame the educators and parents.

Not all are idiots, some made common sense decisions and are doing fine but apparently 4 million didn’t.

They can accept the fact that they were given worthless decrees. The best step forward is to enroll in a good trade school and learn a trade that will pay them well.

NEET is neat!

Might drive more young adults into learning useful trades.

Get a job in the trades

I disagree with the premise of this article. This generation of jobless young people are lazy. They won't last long in the trades.

Neighbors a few doors away have two sons, in late 20's and early 30's. When the younger boy was a teen, I hired him to help in clearing brush on my backyard hillside. He talked more than he worked, about his dreams to own land and work it. That got old, so I stopped hiring him. He left California for Texas to work a job and hopefully buy land, but soon returned. Got a couple of jobs, latest learning to butcher meat, didn't last long. For the last few years all he does is sit on a back yard deck smoking marijuana all day - with his jobless father. Older brother is also lazy, is a traveling musician. I don't talk to them anymore, due to the father's hatred of Trump.

Because much of academia is now a federally guaranteed loan program to sell worthless degrees. And do worthless research.

True, I was got an advanced degree in the buggy repair industry, university said I was guaranteed a high paying job, had to find a new career 😂/s

Side stor, went to a friends graduation, expensive private school, must have two dozen with equestrian degrees, doubt there is much demand for that esp with a couple of dozen graduates each year at a cost of 120k+, and watched a group of women on YouTube all celebrating their ….studies degrees😂

The universities are criminal the govt complicit , the students and their parents are fools

Neither have I.

There are two lines of Gen-Z's. One is essentially useless because they will not show up to work. I do not mean that they do not know how to do the job or that they do not work hard but that they literally will not show up to work with any kind of regularity. They will have any number of excuses and will wail when their exasperated employer points out that by not showing up they have made life harder for the other employees so they are fired.

The other might not have the skills you would have looked for prior but will show up, work and learn. They need training but with it they will become stellar employees.

The problem is there is almost no way of telling who is who without hiring them and finding out.
