National Medal of Honor Day

National Medal of Honor Day on March 25th recognizes all Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for valor in the United States and was created in 1861.

The Medal of Honor is awarded only to US military personnel by the President of the United States in the name of Congress for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.

There are three versions of the Medal of Honor; one for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force; Personnel of the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard receive the Navy version.

Since its creation, 3,468 Medals of Honor have been awarded to the country’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and coastguardsmen.

Q. Have any women received the Medal of Honor?
A. Yes. Following the American Civil War, President Andrew Johnson presented Dr. Mary Edwards Walker with the Medal of Honor for her volunteer work with the Union Army, often going behind enemy lines to care for civilians.

Q. Has any U.S. president received the Medal of Honor?
A. Yes, but only one. Theodore Roosevelt received the honor for his services during the Spanish American War. It was awarded to Roosevelt posthumously by President Bill Clinton in 2001.

Q. Are the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Medal of Honor the same thing?
A. Yes, but Medal of Honor is the correct term.

The National Medal of Honor Museum is a museum that honors United States Armed Forces Medal of Honor recipients, founded and funded by the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation. The museum is scheduled to open on March 25, 2025 in Arlington, Texas, with groundbreaking beginning in March 2022.

"When we located the museum here in 2019, we had zero Medals of Honor in our collection. When we open, we'll have 50," said retired Air Force Col. Mike Caldwell, the museum's assistant vice president of communications and veteran engagement. Included in that collection is the first Medal of Honor ever presented, which went to Army 1st Lt. Jacob Parrott, who served in the Civil War.

 In one square acre, museum visitors can see courage and patriotism on display. The museum boasts an impressive collection of artifacts, from battle and dress uniforms of recipients to flags, dog tags, family photos and firearms dating back to World War I.

I could have sworn I saw rain on the radar over your area recently. Maybe they blew up east of you and I assumed they’d rained on you beforehand.
Bummer you’re dealing with fire warnings. Way too many areas across the country dealing with that this year. :-(

It is warm here. About 70º right now. The kitties have been very happy with this kind of weather. Very little wind....that makes me happy, too!

I hope you are done with violent stormy weather in your general area for a while. At least all the bad stuff missed you, which I’m sure is a relief.

Oh man, that 70 degrees sounds sooooo nice. It’s 50 here so even without pollen, I couldn’t have anything open.
Bet the kitties are really enjoying this evening. Perfect weather for wandering their territories.

We have a quiet week ahead but rain this weekend. As of now, no bad storms are expected but we’ll see how it goes.
Definitely relieved we missed out on the bad weather over the weekend. Some areas across the state had a ton of hail with their storms.
